Job Title: Assistant Area Head, Foundation and Supported Learning
As Assistant Area Head, Foundation and Supported Learning you will play a vital role in supporting the Head of Area with the operational management and quality assurance of programmes, while also maintaining a teaching commitment. You’ll act as a role model for teaching excellence, lead on the promotion of innovative practice, and line manage staff to ensure high performance and positive outcomes for learners. This role covers both the Colchester and Braintree campus.
About the Role:
Responsibilities
* Deputise for the Head of Area when required, ensuring the smooth running of the department.
* Provide leadership in the quality of teaching, learning, and assessment, supporting colleagues and sharing best practice.
* Undertake teaching duties within the area with a reduced teaching load to balance management responsibilities.
* Line manage and support staff, including performance management, staff welfare, and professional development.
* Assist with timetabling, resourcing, and ensuring effective staff deployment across programmes.
* Contribute to student recruitment, retention, and achievement while promoting the area’s programmes.
* Support curriculum development, innovation, and the introduction of new income streams.
* Promote equality, diversity, safeguarding, and a safe learning environment across all programmes.
Essential Experience
* Significant knowledge and experience of current practices and innovations in teaching and learning.
* Evidence of leading or co-ordinating a team, demonstrating improvements in quality and success indicators.
* Experience of supporting staff in developing excellence in teaching, learning, and assessment.
* Effective management of staff and non-staff resources to deliver a high-quality student experience.
* Experience of curriculum development, marketing, and promotion to drive continuous improvement.
* Experience of pastoral support, behaviour management, and working with challenging learners.
* Strong understanding of Equality, Diversity, Safeguarding, and PREVENT.
Essential Qualifications
* Good standard of general education (GCSEs or equivalent, including English and Maths A–C).
* Vocational or academic qualification to a minimum of Level 3.
* Teaching qualification – minimum of Level 4 (e.g. Certificate in Education or equivalent).
Desirable Qualifications
* Undergraduate or postgraduate degree.
* Assessor/Verifier awards (or equivalent).
Desirable Experience
* Experience of learner-responsive curriculum development.
