This is a fixed-term role until 31 August 2026.

Location: Brighton College

Salary: The post is residential and comes with free accommodation in a shared house with other PGATs. Three cooked meals per day are provided during term time, and the salary is £20,765 per annum.

Vacancy Type: Fixed Term, Full Time

Department

The Sports Department consists of 10 members of permanent teaching and coaching staff, typically 10+ assistant teachers who support the delivery of the games programme, and a dedicated sports administrator. It has a track record of coaching players who have progressed to international levels and professional sport. Based in the School of Science and Sport, a wide games programme is offered; pupils participate in twice weekly games sessions, with additional sessions for representative squads in core sports.

Physical Education is taught as an academic subject from Year 10 upwards. The department follows the AQA GCSE syllabus and offers a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport in the Sixth Form.

The Role

The PGATs are integral members of the Sports Department and will be assisting with and leading sports coaching sessions from day one. Responsibilities include:

* Coaching up to 11 games sessions per week.
* Being responsible for at least one competitive team each term, including weekend fixtures.
* Gaining experience of some classroom teaching of academic P.E. under the guidance of a main experienced teacher.
* Assisting in covering for absent colleagues across all College departments.

Apart from sport, PGATs are expected to be a co-tutor for a group of boarding pupils, including registration, pastoral time, parent liaison and report writing, under guidance. They will also take one evening duty per week in the attached boarding house and be involved in delivering other aspects of the boarding programme, such as evening activities in the SSS. This varied role provides a wide range of experience for progressing into full teaching roles in due course.

Safeguarding Responsibilities

* This role involves daily contact with pupils and is a regulated activity relevant to children.
* All staff and volunteers share responsibility for safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons in their care.
