Overview
At Boeing Defence UK, an AMO Maintenance Team Shift Leader is responsible for organising, coordinating and controlling maintenance, troubleshooting, inspection and testing activities for the RAF C-17 Globemaster III on their designated shift. This role ensures all work is completed safely, efficiently and in accordance with authorised maintenance documentation, engineering drawings, contractual requirements and regulatory Health & Safety and Quality standards. The Shift Leader provides technical leadership, mentors personnel, drives continuous improvement and ensures accurate maintenance data capture and disposition.
Position Responsibilities
* Lead, supervise and allocate work to shift maintenance personnel to deliver scheduled and unscheduled maintenance in accordance with Aircraft Manager (AM) priorities, AMO procedures or as directed by the 99 Sqn management team.
* Plan, assign and oversee maintenance tasks including assembly, disassembly, overhaul, modification and upgrade of aircraft systems and components.
* Ensure engineering drawings, approved data, maintenance manuals and work instructions are available and correctly interpreted by the team.
* Perform and/or oversee validation, verification and disturbed system functional tests to confirm system integrity and performance.
* Verify correct tagging, storage and disposition of uninstalled components and consumables in accordance with procedures; update relevant material systems.
* Collate, validate and submit shift maintenance records, defect logs, handover diary entries and electronic reports to Maintenance Manager, Operations Manager, AM and Quality; ensuring accurate disposition of maintenance data.
* Conduct independent inspections, supervise maintenance tasks as required and participate in root cause analysis and corrective action tracking for recurring discrepancies.
* Establish and maintain shift processes, procedures and checklists to ensure regulatory and contractual compliance.
* Coordinate with engineering, quality, logistics, production planning, and external technical representatives to resolve technical queries and support investigations.
* Maintain workplace safety: enforce PPE, perform FOD walks, monitor human factors (fatigue/workload), and promptly report hazards and incidents.
* Allocate a Group Coordinator (GC) as required for each maintenance input and liaise throughout the shift to ensure the aircraft is safe for maintenance tasks to be completed by the team.
* Attend or nominate a suitably qualified deputy for Tier 1 & Tier 2 briefs and support the AM in handover/takeover of aircraft transferring between AMO and Military Maintenance Organisations.
* Track shift workforce availability / absences and communicate them to the MM/OM; update the Workforce Planner.
* Ensure tool control and calibration status of test equipment used on shift and support AMO audits and inspections.
* Operate within delegated authorities for deferred defects, resource allocation and aircraft status; escalate exceptions to MM/OM or AM.
Required Qualifications
* Strong knowledge of aircraft maintenance practices: maintenance manuals, engineering drawings, technical data control, defect reporting and root cause analysis.
* Strong communication skills (both written and oral).
* Proven supervisory/leadership experience in an AMO (or military equivalent) maintenance environment (team lead / shift leader responsibilities).
* Familiarity with regulatory, quality and H&S requirements (including tool control, FOD prevention, PPE and human factors).
* Attention to detail and proficient computer skills, including the Microsoft Office suite.
Additional Qualifications
* EASA/UK B1 License, either restricted or unrestricted.
* Aircraft Maintenance, completed an Apprenticeship or have sufficient equivalent practical experience in aircraft maintenance.
* Ability to hold a company authorisation at the same grade (minimum MOD Phase 2 technical training in line with MAA RA4808(1) regulations), NVQ Level 3.
* Experience working on the C-17 Globemaster III or similar military transport aircraft.
* Previous experience in an AMO, military maintenance, or regulated aviation environment.
* Knowledge of regulatory compliance, quality standards and aviation Health & Safety requirements.
* Hold a UK Driving License and be capable of holding an airside driving permit (Colour perception Red/Green safe).
* Formal training in leadership, quality systems, auditing, and continuous improvement (e.g., Six Sigma/Lean).

Additional role information
Shift Work: This role requires shift work on a weekly rotating basis. Week 1 is Monday to Friday from 07:45 to 16:30; Week 2 is Monday to Thursday from 16:00 to 01:45. A Shift Allowance is provided to compensate for these hours. Work Authorisation: This requisition is for a locally hired position in the UK.
