Overview
Quality Inspector role with a UK-leading metal recycling business based in Stoke-on-Trent. This is a hands-on, fast-paced position focused on quality, safety, and compliance within high-volume operations.
Role
As a Quality Inspector, you’ll monitor the quality of incoming and outgoing materials, from checking merchant deliveries to overseeing vessel loading, ensuring all materials meet the company’s quality and safety standards. This role suits someone who works well in a hands-on environment and participates in day-to-day yard operations.
Key Responsibilities
* Inspect and assess the quality of incoming merchant deliveries (up to 25 tonnes of material).
* Identify and remove non-conforming materials (e.g., wood, concrete, tyres, dirt).
* Visually inspect loads and coordinate with crane operators to review loads.
* Oversee material quality loaded onto vessels; liaise with customer inspectors and the commercial team.
* Monitor and report any battery-containing items to prevent fire risks.
* Report non-conformances via the internal WhatsApp group and maintain visual records (photos).
* Collaborate with the yard team to improve the quality of ferrous scrap.
Requirements
* Strong attention to detail with a proactive, hands-on approach.
* Experience in metal recycling.
* Ability to identify contamination and quality issues.
* Ability to work independently and with operations teams.
* Flexibility to work night shifts on a rotational basis (approximately 1 in 4–5 weeks).
* Excellent communication skills and confidence to challenge quality issues when required.
Details
* Shift pattern: 06:30 – 17:30 Monday to Friday; approximately 1 week of nights (18:00–06:00) every 4–5 weeks when vessels are loaded.
* Salary: £40,000–£50,000 depending on experience.
* Benefits: 23 days annual leave plus Bank Holidays; company pension.
