University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. Job Title: Junior Clinical Fellow. Start Date: August/September 2026. Contract Type: Fixed term. Duration: 12 months. Purpose for Fixed Term: Limited Term Project. This post is appointed on a fixed‑term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum.
Responsibilities
* Participate in the Tier 1 resident doctor rota (FY3‑ST2 equivalent) on the neonatal unit, covering shifts on intensive care, high dependency, special care and transitional care.
* Cover the delivery suite bleep and attend high‑risk deliveries.
* Perform post‑natal ward and community reviews.
* Develop procedural skills including peripheral cannulation, central line insertion (umbilical and long line), lumbar puncture and tracheal intubation.
Additional Information
* Appointments are made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust‑appointed fellow doctors and dentists.
* Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training‑grade doctors, and a named educational supervisor will be assigned at the start of the post.
* Extensive CPD support is available, including study leave options.
* Salary is based on the NMPD pay circular, with basic pay at a nodal pay point linked to the grade and any additional remuneration for overtime, weekend allowance or enhanced hours.

Qualifications, Training & Experience
Essential Criteria
* MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
* GMC registration with a licence to practise.
* Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
* Fully qualified doctor with a minimum 24‑month experience post‑medical school graduation.
Desirable Criteria
* MSc/BSc (or other intercalated degree).
* Working towards or completion of MRCPCH or equivalent.
* At least 12 months experience working in the NHS, including paediatric or neonatal experience.
Aptitudes and Skills
Essential Criteria
* Provider of NLS (& APLS) or equivalent.
* Competent IT skills and familiarity with NHS systems.
* Evidence and ability to work effectively in multi‑professional teams.
* Understanding of equality and diversity and how this affects patients, visitors and staff.
* Evidence of effective communication and liaison with patients, carers and colleagues (verbal and written communication skills in English).
* Understanding of the basic principles of quality improvement and audit.
Desirable Criteria
* Interest or experience in research.
* Proven ability to manage acute neonatal emergencies.
* Competence in practical procedures (neonatal venepuncture, cannulation, umbilical and long line insertion, lumbar puncture, intubation).
* Undertaken an audit or quality improvement project relevant to paediatrics/neonatal medicine.
* Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including other members of the MDT.
