Job Title: Lead Civil Engineer
Location: Glasgow
Overview
The Lead Civil Engineer is overall responsible for managing the substation civil engineering, construction, and contracting activities, from early project engagement through to construction. The role includes tendering activities with Sales and ending with hand‑over to the service department/client, ensuring high quality results in line with project timescales and budget.
What will you do
* Technical: Civil and structural design, checking and commenting on civil documentation in accordance with contractual requirements of tenders/projects.
* Knowledge of UK building market, standards and regulations.
* Supervise, support, and guide civil designers; resolve site technical queries, remedial works and snags.
* Support CDM coordinator / temporary works coordinator in enactment of duties.
* Contribute technical advice during feasibility, design, construction and commissioning phases for projects to the direct labour force and framework contractors.
* Project management: monitor, control, and report on progress (costs and budget) throughout the project.
* Investigate and develop cost‑effective design and construction solutions; contribute to development and implementation of client design guidance, standards and specifications.
Experience Required
* Extensive experience in developing project requirements, cost estimates, project plans and budgets within the construction industry (preferably on large multi‑million dollar projects).
* Civil and structural design, ability to check and comment on civil documentation, designs and calculations in accordance with contractual requirements of tenders/projects.
* Assist in the negotiations and awarding of contracts.
* Resolve disputes, negotiate change orders, and communicate decisions to client, subcontractors and management personnel.
* Assess and provide technical evaluation of subcontractors and participate in tender activities, including production of technical specifications and supporting documentation.
* Knowledge of UK Transmission System Operators (TSO) and similar major utilities.
* Chartered Engineer status or working towards it is desirable.
Education and Training Required
* Bachelor or master’s degree in civil engineering or another construction‑related area.
* Membership of a recognised professional institution.
