Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Trainee Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) to join our plastic surgery department. In this role with training you will provide expert clinical care, advanced assessment, diagnosis, and treatment to patients in the plastic surgery department. You will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver patient-centered care, improve health outcomes, and support service development.

As a trainee ANP, when undertaken advanced practice modules you will be able to utilize your advanced clinical knowledge and autonomous decision-making skills to manage complex cases, prescribe medications, and lead health promotion initiatives. Main duties

* Perform comprehensive patient assessments, including history taking, physical examinations, and diagnostic evaluations specific to plastic and reconstructive surgery patients.
* Diagnose and manage a variety of acute and chronic conditions related to plastic surgery, including pre- and post-operative care.
* Develop and implement individualized treatment plans in collaboration with surgeons and multidisciplinary teams.
* Provide expert wound care management, including assessment and treatment of surgical wounds, burns, and complex wounds.
* Prescribe medications, including analgesics, antibiotics, and dressings, in accordance with local protocols and independent prescribing rights.
* Coordinate patient care pathways, ensuring smooth transitions between surgical, outpatient, and community care settings.
* Educate and counsel patients and their families about surgical procedures, recovery expectations, and long-term care plans.
* Participate in surgical clinics, assisting with patient evaluations and follow-up consultations.
* Support and lead clinical audits, research, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and service delivery.
* Act as a clinical mentor and educator for junior staff, nursing students, and other healthcare professionals.
* Ensure compliance with hospital policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements related to patient safety and clinical governance.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

We are looking for an experienced nurse to advance to Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) in our plastic surgery department. Starting as a trainee you will provide expert clinical care to patients undergoing a range of plastic and reconstructive surgical procedures. You will work autonomously and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure exceptional patient outcomes throughout the surgical journey—from assessment and treatment planning to post-operative care and rehabilitation.

The ideal candidate should be willing to undertake advanced practice modules to develop strong decision-making skills and have a compassionate approach to patient care. You will be responsible for managing complex cases, leading clinical initiatives, and supporting service development within a fast-paced hospital environment.


Main Responsibilities (after completion of advanced practice modules)

* Conduct thorough patient assessments including history, physical examination, and diagnostic investigations relevant to plastic and reconstructive surgery patients.
* Formulate differential diagnoses, develop, and implement individualized management and treatment plans.
* Provide advanced clinical care including management of pre-operative and post-operative patients, wound care (including burns and complex wounds), and chronic conditions associated with plastic surgery.
* Prescribe medications independently within scope, including analgesics, antibiotics, and wound care products, adhering to best practice guidelines and local protocols.
* Perform clinical procedures appropriate to the plastic surgery specialty, such as wound debridement, suturing, and removal of sutures or drains.
* Participate actively in plastic surgery clinics, assisting in patient evaluations, surgical planning, and follow-up consultations.
* Coordinate multidisciplinary care, liaising with surgeons, anesthetists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes.
* Deliver patient and family education on surgical procedures, wound management, rehabilitation, and health promotion.
* Lead or contribute to clinical audits, research, and quality improvement projects aimed at enhancing clinical practice and patient care.
* Provide clinical leadership and mentorship to junior nursing staff, students, and other members of the healthcare team.
* Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety, infection control, and governance standards to maintain a safe care environment.
* Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential patient records in line with hospital policies and professional standards.


Person specification

Essential criteria

* Current NMC qualification as a registered nurse
* Excellent skills for assessing specialist, acute and other patient conditions and deciding on the appropriate course of action
* Evidence of study in specialty
* Evidence of teaching experience
* Leadership and research experience
* Experience of Audit
* Specialist knowledge in the management of patients with plastic surgery and burns injuries and elective surgery
* Skills in judgement and decision making
* Excellent communication skills, written and oral including highly effective interpersonal skills with patients, staff and relatives
* Be motivated and dynamic and have a desire to develop the role further
* Computer literate, able to use database and other relevant programmes
* Up to date knowledge of local and national guidelines and developments

Desirable criteria

* Evidence of study at Masters level or willingness to work towards
* Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification
* Recognised teaching Qualification or willingness to undertake
