Job Description
This role is an exciting opportunity for an experienced electrical engineer with knowledge of high, medium, low and extra‑low voltage electrical systems and equipment to join the Environment Agency’s Standards and Engineering team as a Senior Electrical Engineer.
Working within the Standards, Asset Management and Engineering Directorate, you will influence how we deliver services for the future. As part of our Technical Authority you will provide technical engineering leadership and support to the organisation to meet our objectives of safe, reliable and sustainable assets and our commitments to net zero carbon.
Key Responsibilities
* Manage, develop and maintain electrical engineering standards, including electrical safety rules for HV and LV power systems and control systems within assets such as pumping stations, water management and flood defence structures.
* Develop, deliver and maintain competency and skills guidance for all employees managing or carrying out work on electrical systems and equipment.
* Hold a national incident response role, which may be within normal working hours or out of hours.
* Collaborate with the MEICA Engineering Standards team, a cross‑disciplinary team providing technical standards, management and leadership across mechanical, electrical and control system activities.
* Champion diversity and inclusion within the workforce.
Qualifications & Experience
* Good working knowledge of the Electricity at Work regulations and BS 7671 IET wiring regulations.
* Good working knowledge of control systems, including IEC 61508, IEC 62061 and BS EN 13489, and telemetry / SCADA systems.
* Knowledge of high and low voltage generation and distribution systems.
* Experience in developing and delivering Safe systems of work, risk assessments and method statements.
* Testing and isolation of high and low voltage electrical systems and proving dead.
* Strong understanding of a risk‑based approach to electrical maintenance philosophies and implementation, including FMEA, reliability systems and processes.
* Drafting and publishing electrical policy, instructions and guidance.
* Excellent work management, team working and communication skills.

Additional Requirements
* UK driving licence.
* Current membership of a recognised engineering institution and registration as a Chartered Engineer with the UK Engineering Council, or evidence of working toward registration with a realistic prospect within 12 months.
