Stigma and discrimination can seriously impact wellbeing and personal recovery for people who experience psychosis. Peer-delivered interventions for people with psychosis impacted by stigma show promise, but most trials have been small and focused on feasibility. Let’s Talk 2 is a 32-month NIHR-funded randomised controlled trial, led by Prof Tony Morrison and Dr Melissa Pyle (Psychosis Research Unit), following the success of our NIHR-funded feasibility trial, Let’s Talk 1. The trial will evaluate the benefits of Let’s Talk, a peer-delivered intervention aimed at aiding mental health disclosure decision-making, versus standard care from EIP Services and CMHTs. Let’s Talk is adapted from the Honest, Open, Proud Programme developed in the USA by Prof Patrick Corrigan and Associate Prof Jon E Larson. The trial will run across Avon and Wiltshire, Greater Manchester, North East London, and South London. We have a strong PPI team and experts in Psychosis, Peer Support, and Stigma and Discrimination leading the study.
The successful applicants will receive high-quality training in psychosis and stigma research, learn to deliver semi-structured psychosocial assessments, participate in weekly supervision, and work on a clinical trial that advances stigma research. These posts are suitable for individuals interested in pursuing careers in Clinical Psychology or clinical research. Applicants must be available to start on 1st October, 2025.
* To liaise regularly with clinical and voluntary services across GMMH to promote the study, including delivering presentations and aiding recruitment according to monthly targets;
* To meet with participants experiencing psychosis and internalised stigma to complete baseline and follow-up assessments (semi-structured interviews and questionnaires);
* To enter data and manage databases;
* To support and enhance the clinical research activities of the Let’s Talk 2 trial and PRU;
* To undertake training, team meetings, and supervision with a Clinical Psychologist.
Applicants should have a good first degree in Psychology (at least a 2:1) and experience as an assistant psychologist or research assistant. An interest in psychosis, along with knowledge of research design, data analysis, and audit, is essential. Experience with structured psychological or psychiatric interviews is advantageous.
Supervision will be provided by Dr Melissa Pyle (Chief Investigator) and/or Dr Emmeline Joyce (Clinical Psychologist/Trial Manager).
The post is based at Central Park (M40), involving extensive travel within Greater Manchester to visit participants and clinical services. A valid driving license and/or access to transportation are required.
