About the role
Mott MacDonald are leading the way in Nature Services and we are looking for people to join our Ecology Team and play their part in integrating nature into all developments so that together with our clients we can build a better future. We pride ourselves on setting and maintaining high standards and are at the forefront of providing ecological advice. Our team has delivered training on BNG and contributed to CIEEM’s raising standards documents. We have developed tools to collect and manage ecological data, and have advised NHS hospitals and delivered Nature‑based solutions for water treatment and flood management. The Reading office has four core members and is part of the larger London/Croydon team of seven. We are expanding the Reading and Croydon Ecology Team.
Responsibilities
* Deputy to the Regional Lead: oversee staff wellbeing, mentoring, and career development of the Croydon and Reading Ecology Team and line‑manage selected team members.
* Collaborate with the Regional Lead, Area Leader and UK Ecology Team Leader to manage utilisation, appoint people to specific roles, and support training and recruitment.
* Hold regular operational team briefings and meetings to ensure effective team management and communication.
* Lead projects across all stages of a project life‑cycle, from design conception to implementation, giving opportunities to influence scheme design, enhance best practice, and promote ecological outcomes.
* Spend most of the time office‑based while still engaging in site work where your technical expertise is required.
* Build a dynamic, proactive team culture and drive growth in the business.
Candidate profile and qualifications
* A degree in Ecology (or a directly related subject). An additional higher degree is an advantage.
* Over seven years’ experience in Ecological Consultancy (or equivalent with transferable skills).
* Full Member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management or equivalent.
* Must be a Chartered Environmentalist, Chartered Ecologist or Chartered Biologist (or able to achieve this within 6 months).
* Ability to communicate effectively to multi‑disciplinary teams, clients and regulators.
* Proficiency in report writing and experience acting as a checker/reviewer for ecological deliverables.
* Technical specialism (e.g., protected species mitigation licences, advanced botanical skills).
* Desirable: Experience of People Management.
* Desirable: Proven Project Management skills.
* Desirable: Experience preparing costs and text for bids.
* Desirable: Willingness to travel throughout the UK.
* Desirable: Level 1 and 2 Bat Licence.
