Role: Principal Data Engineer (DBT lean). Salary: £70,000 - £90,000 (dependant on experience). Contracting and Permanent hires considered. Location: ALL locations considered. We have offices in Liverpool or Newbury (UK) for Hybrid working and Sibenik (Croatia).

Role
We are looking for a Principal Data Engineer (DBT lean), ideally on a permanent contract, to join our Data Engineering team. In this role you will work closely with our Engineering Director to support the development of our high-performing team, applying extensive engineering expertise to drive business growth and lead consultancy-driven projects. This position requires a leader with a strong combination of hands-on technical excellence and exceptional leadership to guide teams toward quality and strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
* Technical Leadership & Mentorship: Guide and mentor a team of engineers, providing technical direction and developing their skills to ensure high-quality outcomes for clients.
* Technical Project Ownership: Lead the technical direction and execution of critical business transformations, ensuring sustainability and quality; work closely with Business Analysts to ensure the solution meets business needs.
* Client Engagement: Act as the technical liaison between engineering teams and clients, ensuring client satisfaction through durable, scalable solutions.
* Quality Assurance & Best Practice: Establish and enforce data engineering standards, reusable frameworks, and quality assurance across data pipelines to ensure quality and performance.
* Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date with technology developments and share learning opportunities with the wider engineering team.
* On-Site Engagement: Periodically visit client sites to strengthen relationships and demonstrate partnership and collaborative success.
Qualifications & Experience
* Extensive hands-on experience in a business transformation setting, at enterprise level or large-scale delivery.
* Proven experience in data engineering and architecture with a focus on scalable cloud solutions (Azure, GCP, or AWS).
* Data modeling using Kimball, 3NF, or dimensional methodologies; experience with Analytics Engineering in DBT and data modeling in BigQuery (GCP) is highly desirable; telecoms/mobile industry experience beneficial.
* Depth of knowledge across orchestration tools and CI/CD (Azure DevOps or GitHub).
* Experience designing and building operational pipelines using core cloud components such as Azure Data Factory, BigQuery, Airflow, Google Cloud Composer, PySpark, etc.
* Proven experience with medallion-based data architectures and analytics-ready dimensional models (gold layer).
* Familiarity with Unity Catalog and Databricks metadata management.
* Cloud economics knowledge, cost optimization, and infrastructure as code (Terraform) practices.
* Certifications in relevant technologies (e.g., Azure, AWS, GCP, Databricks).
* Ability to inspire, lead, and manage a diverse data engineering team; experience in Agile delivery environments.
Nice to Have
* Consultancy experience across varied clients and industries.
* Knowledge in specific industries such as financial services, telecoms, ecommerce, or retail.
* Experience building Power BI semantic models; familiarity with data management tools like Azure Purview or Collibra.
