We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team.

This post would be suitable for any post CCT candidate wishing to gain experience in the anaesthetic management of major surgical cases including hepatobiliary, ENT, urology, vascular, general surgery and orthopaedics in high-risk patients. The Freeman also has an extensive surgical robotics programme covering urology, ENT, hepatobiliary and colorectal allowing any successful candidate to gain useful experience in this field.

This post is to commence October 2025/ASAP for 9 months.

In addition to the challenges of the role, we can offer you a commitment to teaching, education, research and audit. Candidates for the post must be registered medical practitioners and on, or eligible to join, the Specialist Register within six months of the date of the Appointments Committee.

Main duties of the job

To provide Consultant anaesthetic cover for 9 months due to maternity leave of a colleague, thereby maintaining clinical capacity to treat and care for patients in this surgically orientated hospital.

To provide specialist peri-operative care including pre-operative assessment, intra-operative anaesthetic management and post-operative care to patients undergoing a wide range of operative procedures.

Job responsibilities

Clinical:

* The highest quality patient care is the standard of all clinical care.
* Clinical duties will be to provide peri-operative assessment and peri-operative care for elective and emergency patients across the spectrum of surgical specialties offered at Freeman Hospital, excluding cardiothoracic surgery
* Provision of anaesthesia for all directorate surgical specialities for elective and emergency patients.
* Flexible sessions and sessions in emergency surgery may be included in the job plan
* Flexibility is expected in the weekly timetable to ensure efficient use of the Consultants time and directorate resources
* There may be the opportunity to work in the Pre-Assessment Clinic, with responsibility for assessing fitness, organising special investigations and providing expert opinion on behalf of anaesthetic colleagues
* Work closely with Consultant colleagues, Anaesthetic and Critical care Unit nurses and ODPs and other theatre staff, surgeons and ward staff to ensure good communication at all times to the benefit of high-quality patient care
* Clinical sessions will be of nominal five-hour duration and include theatre anaesthesia with attendant pre- and post-operative care
* It is a condition of employment so far as reasonably practicable, that all employees must minimise the risk of infection to themselves, colleagues, patients, relatives and visitors and in so doing be familiar with and adhere to Trust policies and guidance on infection prevention and control

CPD:

* Undergo Certifying Medical Education (CME) in accordance with guidelines stipulated by the Royal College of Anaesthetists (RCoA) and revalidation standards set by the GMC.
* Planning for individual CPD will be undertaken at annual appraisal and job planning
* All staff are required to fulfil annual trust mandatory training.

Job Planning:

* Undertake an annual appraisal and job plan review. It is expected that objectives within job plan reviews will be based on Trust objectives including fulfilment of fixed contractual commitments on the basis of a 42-week working year with due allowance for statutory holidays
* Initial job planning meeting will take place within three months of starting post

Administrative:

* Undertake administrative duties in relation to the care of his/her patients and in relation to the running of the Directorate in cooperation with the Clinical Director and Directorate Managers
* To undertake general administrative duties within a context of compliance with Directorate and Trust aims and objectives
* To become involved with the financial management of the Directorate budget at all times looking to ensure the delivery of high-quality care to agreed standards but at the same time reviewing working practices to provide the most efficient use of resources
* To participate in the collaborative working between the three peri-operative directorates within the Trust with regard to management planning, clinical governance, risk management, therapeutics, equipment and education and training

Research:

* This Trust welcomes and encourages research as a high-profile activity that compliments the service provided. The emphasis being studies that fall within the National Institute of Health Research portfolio.
* The Directorate recognises that high quality research is an integral part of development and quality care, and undertakes to support and encourage such activities wherever possible

Teaching:

* Teaching and training at undergraduate and postgraduate level is core directorate business and all staff are expected to make an active contribution
* Active involvement in clinical supervision of postgraduate trainees and foundation doctors in the directorate is expected from all Consultants
* Participation in the teaching and training of other health care professionals within the Directorate
* After appropriate training and CPD, most consultants are expected to be selected to be educational supervisors for anaesthetic trainees and fellows, accountable to RCOA College Tutor.


Person Specification


Education, Qualifications and Specialist Skills

* Primary Medical Qualification
* Full GMC Registration
* Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register (within 6 months from the date of the AAC)
* FRCA or equivalent
* Higher Degree
* Special skills training in the specialty


Clinical Experience

* Ability to take independent responsibility for the peri-operative clinical care of patients having elective and emergency anaesthesia
* Ability to offer an expert peri-operative clinical opinion within the theatre, critical care and ward environment
* Committed to patient safety, high quality care and excellent patient experience
* Evidence of experience in Perioperative management of complex surgical patients including major hepatobiliary, general surgery orthopaedic, vascular, urology and ENT patient


Management and Administration Experience

* Committed to share in professional, management and teaching responsibilities necessary to fulfil the obligations of the Directorate, Trust and its workforce
* Flexible approach to service delivery and a committed approach to service development
* Commitment to economic use of resources
* A clear understanding of clinical governance
* Ability to demonstrate leadership in clinical and non-clinical work
* Familiarity with IT and general computer skills
* Proven management and administration ability and understanding of management goals
* Completion of management course and/or qualification
* Experience in developing and implementing new technologies
* Knowledge and understanding of the current structure of the NHS and planned changes
* Evidence of delivery leadership/project management


Teaching

* Ability to teach practical and clinical skills
* Evidence of active participation in teaching
* Evidence of supervising junior medical staff
* Postgraduate qualification in medical education
* ATLS/ALS/APLS instructor status
* Evidence of organising a teaching programme


Audit and Research

* Evidence of completed audit projects to improve the quality of patient care
* Evidence of involvement in and understanding of research methodology
* Ability to critically review relevant literature
* Initiating and running audit projects and completing the loop
* Publications of relevant papers in field of anaesthesia in the last three years


Personal Attributes
