This position is advertised at 37 hours per week. Job Description: The Ministry of Defence Guard Service (MGS) provides high quality security services at over 170 MOD sites across the United Kingdom. The MGS has guarded the Defence Estate for over 30 years including high profile locations such as MOD Main Building in London, Whitehall and His Majesty's Naval Bases at Portsmouth, Devonport, and the Clyde. We provide access control, military working dogs, control room operations and other security services. We play a vital role supporting the Defence Mission and work to protect the Defence estate and personnel from crime, terrorism, espionage, and sabotage threats. The MGS has over 2,700 employees. MGS Security Officers are often the first point of contact for employees, visitors and contractors on sites and we pride ourselves on our professional, customer-focused culture. For more information about MGS, please look on youtube using the link below: Working for the Ministry of Defence Guard Service - https://youtu.be/UrLfy2MZXpg The Ministry of Defence Guard Service (MGS) is seeking a forward-thinking, people-focused Workforce Development Manager to lead the design and delivery of training across our UK-wide security workforce. This is a high-impact role that sits at the heart of our mission to equip our Security Officers with the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to succeed, today and in the future. Workforce development is not just a compliance obligation for the MGS; it is a key strategic priority. In this role, you will play a vital part in fostering a culture of continuous improvement by building and managing learning programmes that support individual development and organisational performance. You will be responsible for ensuring all Security Officers meet mandatory training requirements and that our development offer remains responsive, accessible, and forward-looking. You'll lead a national approach to training delivery, managing a small but capable team of trainers and overseeing the activity of Coaching & Mentoring Officers (CMOs) across the country. You will attend National Health and Safety meetings to present data on training activity, take ownership of training governance, and work closely with senior managers and stakeholders to ensure that training aligns with operational needs and regional priorities. This is a strategic role with a strong operational focus. You will work directly with senior stakeholders to identify training gaps, design tailored solutions and ensure a joined-up approach to delivery. You will also take the lead on achieving accreditation for internal training programmes, ensuring our development offer is not only effective but recognised. The successful candidate will bring a strong understanding of workforce development principles, alongside the ability to operate with confidence in a changing, complex environment. You'll need to be adaptable, self-motivated, and able to engage with a wide range of individuals, from new recruits to senior leaders with credibility and clarity. The post does not offer relocation expenses. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period. What You'll Do: Lead and manage a small team of trainers responsible for delivering high-quality training to Security Officers across the UK. Coordinate and oversee the planning and organisation of training activity across the MGS, ensuring national consistency. Act as a subject matter expert, offering informed, confident advice to address customer-specific training needs and challenges. Engage regularly with senior leadership, identifying emerging training requirements and developing appropriate, timely responses. Drive accreditation efforts, taking the lead in securing recognition for internal training programmes. Design and deliver tailored presentations aligned to the specific needs of key stakeholders and customer groups. Preparedness to travel nationally and possibly internationally in support of training and workforce development activities. Post Location The permanent duty station will be located in one of the MGS Head Offices in either Colchester, Donnington, Southwick Park, Clyde or the closest MGS duty station. You may, however, be required to undertake detached duty at other sites should there be an operational need. Essential Criteria Relevant training and management experience is essential.
