Senior Sister / Charge Nurse

The Neonatal Senior Sister/Charge Nurse will be responsible for the daily clinical and operational management of the clinical areas and the professional development of the staff within those areas. The Neonatal Senior Sister/Charge Nurse will provide support to all staff and will be required to work in partnership with all multi-disciplinary teams. You will be responsible for providing leadership and professional development for the nursing and support workers within the services


Main duties of the job

You will work with the Neonatal Matron and paediatric senior nurses to develop best practice and ensure that there is consistency across the directorate. In collaboration with the relevant senior nursing team and Matrons, they will be required to provide senior nursing cover for Neonatal unit.

You will also be expected to ensure all staff are compliant with the Trust Safeguarding Policies and procedures.

Job responsibilities

To be an expert practitioner, role modelling, demonstrating advanced communication and nursing skills, using expert knowledge and decision making skills in nursing premature and ill new born babies.

.

To recognise deteriorations in clinical conditions and initiate a rapid and appropriate response.

To be accountable for nursing practice and take every opportunity to sustain and improve knowledge and professional competence of staff.

To have responsibility for resolving patient/parent complaints relating to clinical care/operational issues within the area.

To make an assessment of the neonate and families psychological and social needs, implementing an agreed management plan including appropriate referral.

To promote communication between primary and secondary health care providers and Chelsea & Westminster Foundation Trust, as well as the non-statutory sector of Childrens Hospices.

To participate in discharge planning from hospital to community services and the families home, ensuring a seamless and smooth process. Ensuring care planning is comprehensive and effective.

Working in collaboration with the Neonatal MDT support the transition for babies who are referred to other inpatient services and provide support for families during the transition process.

Person Specification


Education and qualifications

* Registered Nurse (Child/Adult)
* Degree/Diploma in Higher Education
* Post registration qualification relevant to the area of speciality or equivalent Neonatal Intensive Care qualification
* Master's Degree or working towards one
* Recognised Mentorship/Teaching qualification
* Willingness to undertake leadership/management course


Experience

* Experience working within Community Team
* Relevant Post registration experience working as an experienced Band 6
* Experience of excellence in leading all/part of a clinical team in practice
* Experience of teaching and supporting learners/staff etc
* Wide range of clinical experience
* Experience of clinical supervision
* Managing clinical team


Skills and knowledge

* Proven clinical knowledge linked to area of specialty and excellence in care delivery
* Proven leadership and deputizing skills in clinical area
* Proven knowledge of safety issues through clinical governance and risk management
* Excellent communication skills with patients, relatives, staff and external contracts including in challenging situations, demonstrating respect and kindness
* Experience of data collection for quality monitoring/audit
* Experience of risk management/assessment
* Understanding of clinical audits and governance
* Experience of using databases
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively
* Experience with team working
* Involvement in clinical audits and clinical governance
