Domestic Abuse Paralegal
Watford, Hertfordshire. £26,000 - £35,000
Job Purpose
To support survivors of domestic abuse by managing a caseload of protective injunction matters (Non-Molestation Orders, Occupation Orders) and related family proceedings. The postholder will deliver high-quality, trauma-informed legal services, ensure compliance with legal aid and regulatory requirements, and work collaboratively within a specialist team to provide compassionate, client-focused support. The role includes preparing urgent applications, liaising with courts and external agencies, and assisting solicitors in progressing cases efficiently and effectively. You will work as part of a committed and supportive team delivering legal services with compassion, professionalism, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
* Take initial instructions from clients sensitively and with understanding of trauma-informed practice
* Assist in preparing and drafting urgent court applications, including Non-Molestation Orders and Occupation Orders
* Prepare statements, chronologies, and supporting documentation in line with court and legal aid requirements
* Liaise with courts, police, support workers, and interpreters as required
* Ensure timely and accurate completion of Legal Aid applications (including emergency funding)
* Manage and maintain case files, ensuring compliance with internal procedures and regulatory standards
* Attend hearings with counsel or solicitors when required (as note-taker or support)
* Update clients regularly and ensure they are informed and supported throughout the legal process
* Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding protocols at all times
* Support solicitors with case progression, correspondence, and administrative tasks as needed
Person Specification
Qualifications & Experience
* Law degree or equivalent legal qualification
* Experience in family law and domestic abuse legal work
* Experience managing own caseload of domestic abuse cases from start to finish
* Working knowledge of CCMS and Legal Aid Agency procedures
* Experience in legal aid-funded family law work
* Strong drafting, organisational, and communication skills
* Ability to work well under pressure, especially in urgent and sensitive cases
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office and case management systems
