Overview

Do you want to be part of a small but busy team who provide advice, operational and procedural support to Ministers and the wider department on Parliament? If so, we can offer you an exciting opportunity to join the fast‑paced and welcoming Parliamentary Team at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

This team leads on a range of issues including processing written parliamentary questions (PQs), supporting Ministers ahead of oral questions (OPQs), supporting Ministers with debates, secondary legislation (SIs), select committees and procedural issues. We support policy officials to provide timely advice and briefing to enable ministers to meet their parliamentary responsibilities.

We are looking for one Parliamentary Officer to support our work on PQs. The officer will play a critical role in ensuring we process PQs in a timely fashion and ensure highest standards of accuracy in answering questions. We are looking for an enthusiastic person who is also interested in gaining wider experience of how our parliamentary team supports the department, including with private office colleagues. The Parliamentary Officers will work directly with and under the supervision of an experienced team leader.


Responsibilities

* Ensuring a smooth process of PQs from start to finish, leading on a specific policy portfolio;
* Triaging PQs tabled to the department and allocating to the correct policy teams;
* Liaising with parliamentary teams across Whitehall to negotiate the transfer of PQs;
* Working directly with the ministerial private offices to ensure clearance of questions to meet parliamentary deadlines;
* Providing procedural guidance to policy officials and fielding any inquiries;
* Working on the department's new case management system for PQs and helping to develop and improve ways of working;
* Supporting the wider team to innovate and improve processes, including the adoption of AI;
* Assisting parliamentary team colleagues on wider priority duties.


Qualifications and Experience

* Ability to convey complex information in plain English;
* Effective team working and desire to get stuck into a broad range of tasks;
* Ability to build relationships and deliver effectively through others;
* Excellent organisational skills and the ability to work at pace;

Working Conditions

This role may require some extended hours depending on business needs, for which flexi time is available.

Successful candidates must undergo a criminal record check and meet the security requirements before they can be appointed.
