Macmillan Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

We are looking for a passionate and motivated Speech and Language Therapist who is committed to making a meaningful difference for people living with head and neck cancer. You will be eager to grow and develop specialist skills within this rewarding role.

This role offers the opportunity to join a well‑established and respected Adult Speech and Language Therapy service, with excellent support at its core. You will also be an integral member of the multidisciplinary Head and Neck Cancer Team. The postholder will be based at Glangwili General Hospital and will provide services across the Hywel Dda University Health Board region. The role will require working at other locations, as necessary, to meet service needs.


Main duties of the job

Contribute to the provision of speech and language therapy for the head and neck cancer population of Hywel Dda University Health Board by providing high quality, efficient and effective speech and language therapy services, within available resources and in accordance with the Registration Codes of HCPC and RCSLT.

Treat, manage and support patients and carers of patients with highly complex communication and swallowing disorders as a consequence of head and neck cancer.

Function independently with a developed level of clinical expertise in dysphagia and acquired communication difficulties to fulfil the core responsibilities identified.

Manage a complex, specialist caseload, independently applying knowledge of advanced management in dysphagia, including knowledge of Videofluoscopic Swallow Study (VFSS), Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and tracheostomy.

* 47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers
* Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services

Person Specification


Qualifications & Knowledge


Essential

* Degree in Speech and Language Therapy
* HCPC registration
* RCSLT membership
* Successful completion of specialist short courses relevant to area of clinical expertise to postgraduate diploma level.
* Accredited post‑basic dysphagia training
* Knowledge of a wide range of specialist assessment tools and procedures relevant to specialist caseload.
* Knowledge of key characteristics leading to a specialist differential diagnosis relevant to specialist caseload.
* Knowledge of selecting, setting and evaluating specialist treatment goals.
* Knowledge of a specialist range of therapeutic interventions demonstrating the evidence base for these approaches
* Knowledge of multidisciplinary team approaches.


Desirable

* Basic Counselling Skills.
* Well established knowledge of national policies and procedures relevant to area of clinical expertise.
* Basic qualitative and quantitative research approaches.
* Advanced competencies such as tracheostomy, Surgical Voice Restoration, FEES or video fluoroscopy.
* Member of relevant CEN.


Experience


Essential

* Considerable post registration clinical experience relevant to the advertised post/specialist area including supervision of support workers and meeting patient/service user needs through collaborative working with families, carers other professionals and the wider workforce.


Desirable

* Full SLT Student placement, inclusive of assessment.
* Support of junior staff
* Delivery of specialist training to a range of audiences.
* Working with groups.


Other


Essential

* Prepared to work in a variety of sites based upon service need.
* Able to meet the travel requirements of the post in a timely manner
* Flexible approach to work based on work pressures and needs of the service.
* DBS Cleared at enhanced Level.


Desirable

* Welsh Speaker (Level 1)
