A leading medical research institution is seeking an experienced and creative Network Engineer to play a key role in supporting the IT infrastructure that underpins internationally recognised scientific research and teaching.
You’ll join a skilled Systems and Networks team responsible for maintaining a complex server and network environment supporting over 6,000 users across a multi-site organisation. This is a rare opportunity to help shape and deliver cutting-edge IT services within a world-class academic and research setting—without being locked into a commercial IT environment.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the design, installation and ongoing management of the organisation’s enterprise network infrastructure.
* Develop network management tools and help modernise legacy systems with an eye on security, scalability, and performance.
* Provide advanced administration across network and associated infrastructure, including VMware, firewalls, LAN/WAN, data centres, and monitoring platforms.
* Manage and contribute to strategic IT transformation projects including network refreshes, systems integration, and onboarding of new departments.
* Provide technical leadership and third-line support for critical services.
About You:
We’re looking for someone with:
* Strong hands-on experience with Cisco and Fortinet (or similar) technologies.
* Deep technical knowledge of enterprise networking (switches, firewalls, routing, cabling).
* A practical understanding of IT security best practices.
* A track record of identifying service improvements and delivering creative technical solutions.
* Familiarity with both Linux and Microsoft server environments.
* Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
Desirable:
* Experience managing large-scale networks across multiple locations.
* Familiarity with NAC tools, configuration management platforms, and IT service frameworks such as ITIL or ISO27001.
