Locum Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedics – Upper Limb, Shoulder & Elbow

The closing date is 05 February 2026

The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics at the Princess Royal University Hospital, a division of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is looking for an enthusiastic and committed Trauma & Orthopaedic Upper Limb Surgeon with a specialist interest in shoulder and elbow surgery.

The appointed Locum Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon will join a friendly and supportive team of 12 Consultants and 3 Associate Specialists that work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams at the Princess Royal University Hospital and Denmark Hill. There may also be opportunities for cross‑site working between Denmark Hill and the South sites, subject to agreement and needs. The team is currently supported by 12 Specialist Registrars/ Senior Clinical Fellows (Reg level); 16 Junior Clinical Fellows/ Core Surgical Trainees/ MTI and covers both the PRUH and Orpington sites; a Specialist Nurse for Trauma and a Specialist Nurse for Hip Fractures.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be actively involved in the management of Orthopaedic Trauma at Princess Royal University Hospital and provide a sub‑speciality interest in the management of Upper Limb. It is essential that the post holder has experience and fellowship‑level training in shoulder, elbow, hand & wrist trauma (upper limb) and is likely to obtain CCT in the future or already has it or its equivalent. Experience in the management of general trauma and fragility and hip fractures is desirable.

The Trauma in‑patients are based in a purpose‑designed 28 bed ward for Hip fracture patients and other Surgical wards for overflow. There is a full component of nursing and physiotherapy, 24/7 for hip and other fragility fractures. There is a dedicated Children’s ward at the PRUH. ITU facilities are available at PRUH or Denmark Hill.

The Orpington Elective Orthopaedic hospital is an elective centre with four laminar flow theatres, an admissions lounge and two wards of 19 and 28 beds.

There is a dedicated Day Surgery Unit at the PRUH, with 6 theatres, Mon‑Fri and some Sat working, with approximately 12 Trauma & Orthopaedic lists per week, shared with other specialties. The unit is equipped to do U/Limb, Lower Limb and some types of Foot & Ankle day surgery, elective and trauma cases.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will need to demonstrate proficiency in all aspects of upper limb surgery. Knowledge and experience of treating acute and elective shoulder, elbow, hand and wrist conditions is essential. Specifically, there will be an emphasis on shoulder and elbow surgery. Candidates will be asked to demonstrate proficiency and a strong background in this. The proposed Job Plan is attached. There will be an average of 8.5 Programmed Activities of Direct Clinical Care, with the remainder being allocated for Supporting Professional and/or other Activities. The contracted hours are 40 per week, equivalent to 10 PAs. The On‑Call commitment is for a 1:12 weekday on call every 3 weeks and a 1:12 weekend rota which is classed as Category A. The 1st on call is supported by a 2nd on call consultant working a separate rota during the weekday on‑calls. The department has a collaborative and pro‑active approach to trauma which the incoming colleague will be expected to support. By mutual agreement, the possibility exists for the post‑holder to increase Direct Clinical Care activities to 9.5 PAs with the payment of an additional programmed activity APA, creating a total of 11 PAs.

Once appointed, there would be an expectation from the Consultant that further duties involving local governance, audit, performance, education and other such duties may be assigned to and expected of them.
