Job overview

Band 6 Deputy Sister/Charge Nurse – Paediatric Critical Care (PCCU) at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The post is based at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Paid staff will work a minimum of 23 hours per week across days, nights and weekend shifts, with rostered shifts across PCCU, Outreach and Retrieval services.


Main duties of the job

* Provide clinical leadership ensuring high standards of individualised nursing and family‑centred care for critically ill children.
* Act as a member of a multidisciplinary team, communicating effectively with all levels of medical and nursing staff.
* Uphold the PCCU Nursing Philosophy of Care.
* Manage the unit on a day‑to‑day basis in the absence of a Senior Sister/Charge Nurse.

Paediatric Critical Care at OUH includes 17 Level 2 and 3 critical care beds and is part of the Thames Valley and Wessex Paediatric Critical Care Operational Delivery Network. The service offers opportunities in SORT (Southampton Oxford Retrieval Team) and Critical Care Outreach, alongside structured competency development and career progression pathways.


Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful candidate will work well within the team, with a mixed shift pattern that includes days and nights throughout the week. Candidates should have a minimum of 3 years post‑registration experience and a relevant paediatric critical care course. A self‑motivated, enthusiastic individual who can lead, motivate and teach junior staff and students is required.

Qualifications

* Registered with the NMC as a Child RSCN or Adult RN.
* Recognised UK paediatric critical care course (e.g., PCCS or HEI accredited).
* Degree‑level study or working towards a degree.
* Evidence of commitment to teaching staff and students.


Experience

* Relevant critical care nursing experience.
* Demonstrated knowledge and use of research findings.


Personal Qualities

* Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
* Awareness of the qualities required of staff working in critical care.
* Insight into managerial issues relating to people and resources.


Knowledge and Skills

* Clinical knowledge in the area of speciality and excellence in practice.
* Experience of leading and supporting a team in a clinical area.
* Knowledge of audit, quality improvement, and risk management practices.


Other

* Evidence of continuing professional development.
