Due to increased demand the business is now recruiting for a full-time Principal Chemist. What you will do: To synthesise new products for Ecolab and drive innovation (Ion Exchange resins, adsorbents, chromatography media, resins for bioprocessing, etc). Perform optimisation exercises to improve process efficiency and reduce costs. To work both independently and with existing RD&E staff, ensuring safe and most effective practices. To liaise with process development, technical transfer and production teams ensuring successful commercialization of new products. To study papers, patents and publications to keep up to date with latest developments in the field. To help maintain the required level of Health and Safety within the lab including upkeep of H&S databases (e.g. COSHH, SDS, Risk Assessments). To undertake any other reasonable tasks as required by the Management of the company. Minimum Qualifications: A PhD degree in chemistry or equivalent (Preferably with a bias towards synthetic Chemistry – organic/polymer). An in-depth knowledge/experience of synthesis (preferably organic/polymer) and associated analytical techniques (preferably related to chromatographic/bead products). Minimum 2 years’ experience in a research and development or scientifically related field, preferably within an industrial setting. Ability to work as part of a team and independently. Some supervisory experience in monitoring, leading/directing a team of individuals in project work/execution. Self-motivated, methodical, and organised with excellent attention to detail and reporting/communication skills. Strong appreciation of research laboratory health and safety considerations (e.g. COSHH, MSDS, Risk Assessments, safe practices for chemical handling etc). Desirable Qualifications: Experience of resin bead preparation (synthetic or natural polymers) and activation techniques. Understanding of conventional emulsification methods, including droplet formation and stabilisation. A broad understanding of the behaviour of hydrocolloids/polymer gels and how to characterise them would be advantageous. Knowledge/understanding of resin bead analytical techniques (particle size analysis, functional group capacity, porosity). Experience of project management/taking a leading role in project/product development. Able to manipulate larger chemical quantities and reactions (2-5 Litres) Knowledge and/or industrial experience within the field of Bioprocessing and associated media utilised in Bioprocessing.
