We are seeking a motivated and knowledgeable Band 7 Diabetes Specialist Midwife to lead our diabetes maternity service. This is an exciting opportunity to work within one of the UK’s most respected teaching hospitals, providing specialist, evidence-based care to women with pre-existing or gestational diabetes. You will work as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team alongside consultants, diabetes specialist nurses, and dietitians to deliver a high-quality “one-stop shop” service for women and families.
As team leader, you will provide clinical expertise, line management and service development, ensuring timely and individualised care planning across the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal pathway. You will champion education, innovation and governance, supporting midwives and wider staff to deliver safe, responsive and compassionate care. We are looking for an inspirational leader who can balance hands-on clinical care with teaching, quality improvement and forward-thinking leadership.
Main duties of the job
As Diabetes Specialist Midwife Team Leader, you will:
• Provide advanced midwifery care and ensure prescribing for women with diabetes in pregnancy, ensuring timely assessments, follow-up and evidence-based care planning.
• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary antenatal diabetes services, working closely with consultants, diabetes specialist nurses and dietitians.
• Offer expert advice, education and support to colleagues across maternity, primary care and the wider trust, ensuring best practice is shared and implemented.
• Line manage and appraise team members, supporting their development and ensuring service resilience.
• Champion patient education, empowering women and families to understand and manage their condition throughout pregnancy and beyond.
• Take an active role in governance, clinical audit, complaints investigation, and implementation of national initiatives such as the Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle.
• Contribute to service development, research and quality improvement to enhance outcomes and patient experience.
• Promote a culture of safety, compassion and inclusivity, ensuring women’s voices and experiences are at the heart of service delivery.
