Job Summary:
Under supervision, performs a variety of work activities while providing customer service in the operation of a recreational, historic or natural resource park; interprets natural features of the area, or historic objects/artifacts for visitors; and ensures public safety by enforcing Park rules and regulations. Will assist for grounds-keeping activities, water system maintenance, vehicle and equipment maintenance, and heavy equipment operator.
Park Ranger Senior:
- Under minimal supervision, this position will serve as a team leader for grounds-keeping activities, water system maintenance, vehicle and equipment maintenance, and heavy equipment operator..
Job Duties:
Park Ranger or Park Ranger Senior:
- Host visitors: Help train staff and volunteers, conduct interpretive programs, and lead guided walks or hikes. Provides information in response to visitor questions, direction, guidance, and concerns. Provides customer services by phone and in-person and respond to public inquiries about park hours, accommodations, reservations.
- Cash Handling: Perform cashier duties at Contact Station/Gift shop; collect and account for fees for park admission and store purchases.
- Public & Staff Safety: Promote the safety of park visitors, enforce park rules, protect park resources, utilize two-way radio communications system, confers with local officials and law enforcement officers, completes all necessary reports concerning incidents. Assists park management with maintaining/inspecting park infrastructure and training implementation/development.
- Maintenance: Performing basic maintenance and inspection of park infrastructure, buildings and equipment for the park. Assist in troubleshoot, repair and install restroom fixtures/toilets, build fences, perform trail maintenance, general plumbing, preventative maintenance, landscaping, minor electrical repairs/troubleshooting, oil changes/fluid maintenance of vehicles/equipment, and wastewater/water system maintenance. Inspect park archaeological resources and perform ruins stabilization and preventative maintenance as needed.
- Reporting: Completes reports regarding activities, transactions and progress relating to maintenance activities.

Park Ranger Senior:
- Experience in interpretation, enforcement, ruins stabilization and working in a retail setting.
- Strong Maintenance Skills: Serve as the primary leader in performing basic maintenance and inspection of park infrastructure, buildings and equipment for the park. Troubleshoot, repair and install restroom fixtures/toilets, build fences, perform trail maintenance, general plumbing, preventative maintenance, landscaping, minor electrical repairs/troubleshooting, oil changes/fluid maintenance of vehicles/equipment, and wastewater/water system maintenance. Inspect park archaeological resources and perform ruins stabilization and preventative maintenance as needed. Plan and lead work crews including volunteers and Department of Corrections crews.
- Lead and assist in training of subordinate staff.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge: Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. Park rules, fees and revenue functions; techniques for display and interpretation of objects/artifacts and general/natural resources to visitors; working knowledge of maintenance strategies, and general office procedures.
Skill: Public relations and information dissemination; service orientation; critical thinking; active listening; driving and operating automotive equipment; basic curatorial techniques; natural resource management, basic maintenance troubleshooting, repair and preventative maintenance skill sets in areas such as landscape, ruins stabilization, vehicle and equipment maintenance plumbing, electrical and general construction/building maintenance; multi-tasking; and deescalation techniques.
Ability: Research of natural or historical information; performing math calculations; first aid techniques; oral and written communications; interpersonal relationships; perform vehicle, equipment and building maintenance and repairs; deescalate upset or non-compliant visitors; train new staff in policies and procedures.
Selective Preference(s):
Park Ranger:
Two years of experience equivalent to a Park Ranger Specialist; OR three years of work experience in customer service, library or museum work; OR a Bachelor's degree in Park Management, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field. Any combination of training and experience that meet knowledge, skills, and abilities may be substituted.
Park Ranger Senior:
Three years experience equivalent to a Park Ranger II, OR three years of work experience in customer service and maintenance in park related setting; OR a Bachelor's degree in Park Management, Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a closely related field. Any combination of training and experience that meet knowledge, skills, abilities may be substituted.
Pre-Employment Requirements:
Must possess and maintain a current Arizona Driver license appropriate to assignment.
Some positions may require certification as an emergency Medical Technician, Water Distribution and Treatment Systems Operator, and/or Certified Interpretive Guide.

Retirement:
Eligible for Arizona State Retirement System pension. Enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment for newly hired State of Arizona employees.
