Consultant Psychiatrist for the Intensive Care Unit Colne Ward and Hillingdon Light House – Permanent, Full Time (10 PAs). The role is based at Riverside Centre in Uxbridge, Middlesex.
We are seeking a highly motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to lead the multi‑disciplinary team for patients aged 18 and over experiencing an acute episode of mental illness admitted to the Lighthouse and Colne Ward.
The candidate should be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining CCT at the time of interview.

Job responsibilities
* Clinical Leadership: Provide leadership for assessment and management of patients in PICU and Lighthouse, conduct ward rounds, review care plans, and oversee clinical governance.
* Comprehensive Assessment & Treatment: Conduct thorough assessments, develop individualized treatment plans, and manage psychiatric medication.
* Multidisciplinary Teamwork: Collaborate with nurses, psychologists, social workers, and other team members to deliver holistic care; meet regularly with Consultant Psychiatrists in charge of other wards.
* Discharge Planning: Facilitate smooth transitions back into the community or less intensive settings, working with patients and families.
* Liaison & Collaboration: Maintain communication with community mental health teams and relevant agencies.
* Mental Health Act Implementation: Ensure appropriate implementation of the Act, including assessments and reviews.
* Quality Improvement: Contribute to audits, service evaluations, and other quality improvement initiatives.
* Teaching & Supervision: May involve teaching and supervising junior doctors or other team members.
* On‑Call Responsibilities: Participate in the on‑call rota to provide psychiatric support outside regular hours.
Person specification – Education, qualifications and training
* Fully registered with the GMC with a license to practice
* Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent)
* Approved under Section 12 Mental Health Act with Approved Clinician status or eligible to be on the register of Approved Clinicians
* Inclusion on the Specialist Register (or CCT expected within six months of interview)
* Desirable: Advanced qualification (MSc, LLM, MD, PhD) and/or management training; MRCPsych or equivalent.
Experience
* Extensive experience in adult inpatient psychiatry, particularly with complex co‑morbidities.
* Experience with acute disturbed patients and rapid tranquilisation.
* Knowledge of psychopharmacology, particularly involving women.
* Risk assessment and management in inpatient settings.
* Experience with patients detained under sections of the Mental Health Act and attending tribunals.
* Desirable: Service development and business planning experience; knowledge of national development initiatives.

* Adept at shared decision‑making with patients, relatives, and carers; promotes person‑centred care.
* Strong organisational skills.
* Aware of leadership responsibilities and demonstrates appropriate leadership behaviour.
* Understanding of legal responsibilities, including mental capacity, deprivation of liberty, data protection, equality, and diversity.
* Capable of working independently on initiative.
* Desirable: Same service development and business planning experience as outlined in Experience.
