Wrexham University is seeking a proactive and skilled Demonstrator Technician in Engineering to support the delivery of high-quality technical and practical education within the Faculty of Arts, Computing and Engineering. The role will primarily focus on Electrical, Electronics, Automation, and Renewable Engineering, ensuring that laboratory spaces and equipment are well-maintained and effectively used to enhance the student experience.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Support & Equipment Management
* Provide hands-on technical support for setting up, maintaining, and demonstrating engineering equipment across laboratory and workshop spaces.
* Install, test, troubleshoot, and maintain a diverse range of engineering equipment to support teaching and research activities.
* Ensure the effective management of laboratory equipment and consumables, keeping accurate records of inventory and maintenance schedules.
* Liaise with external suppliers, contractors, and manufacturers to coordinate repairs, upgrades, and procurement.
Student & Academic Support
* Supervise students during technical experiments and practical sessions, offering guidance on best practices and industry-standard techniques.
* Deliver specialist training sessions and workshops to enhance student skills in engineering technologies.
* Support students in individual and group projects, fostering hands-on learning experiences.
* Provide demonstrations and instructions on the use of engineering equipment to students and staff.
* Direct students to academic and pastoral support services when necessary.
Safety & Compliance
* Maintain up-to-date risk registers and conduct risk assessments for all laboratory activities.
* Ensure all technical operations comply with health and safety regulations, reporting and addressing any safety concerns.
* Conduct regular safety checks on equipment and ensure all workshop areas are kept clean, organised, and safe.
Collaboration & Industry Engagement
* Work closely with academic staff, other technicians, and students to ensure high standards of technical provision across engineering programmes.
* Develop links with industry partners to facilitate live projects and practical learning opportunities for students.
* Attend faculty meetings, training sessions, and university recruitment events, including Open Days.
What We’re Looking For
Essential Criteria
* Proven experience in a practical engineering or industry setting.
* Strong knowledge and hands-on ability to install, maintain, and demonstrate engineering equipment.
* HNC or Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant engineering discipline.
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to engage with students, staff, and external partners.
* Strong organisational skills to manage equipment, laboratory resources, and student support effectively.
* Solid understanding of health and safety regulations, including experience in conducting risk assessments.
* Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a technical support team.
Desirable Criteria
* Teaching qualification or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (Advance HE).
* Experience working on research projects, commercial collaborations, or industry partnerships.
* Working knowledge of Moodle or similar platforms for student engagement.
* Ability to communicate in Welsh (desirable but not essential).
