Overview

Freelance Facilitator (Scotland) – The Roots Programme CIC. We are seeking a passionate and experienced Freelance Facilitator, based in Scotland, to join our team in delivering inspiring programmes for young people and communities across the UK.

The Roots Programme CIC brings people together, working across equality and social justice. We seek freelance facilitators with a similar outlook to us, who are passionate about bringing together people across differences and divides within our society. In 2024, we launched our five-year strategy with support from the National Lottery’s UK Fund.

You will deliver elements of our programmes, all of which centre around identity, othering, self-awareness, critical thinking, equality, social justice, community and social action. Your insights and feedback will also help us with the evolution and success of our work.

Responsibilities

* Model and support the ethos and culture of the organisation
* Embody the culture of our organisation in your Workshop Facilitation & Delivery
* Deliver consistently high-quality and engaging workshops to adult community groups, as well as groups of up to 40 community members or young people (in and outside of formalised school settings) or assemblies of large groups of young people. Sometimes this will be co-facilitation alongside another facilitator/teacher/community lead/young person.
* Adhere to the health and safety requirements of the programme, and share best practice when caring for our young people, community members and partners.
* Support the operational planning and delivery of workshops, including some communication with schools and community groups.
* Collaborate with a designated staff member in the third-party organisation (where the work will be delivered) to ensure everything is prepared for the upcoming workshop or trip.
* Willingness to provide valuable feedback and be involved in the design process of our workshops.
* Willingness to deliver sessions initially in Edinburgh. As our work expands, we may ask for delivery in other regions of Scotland, with potential opportunities to travel across the UK if of interest.


Data & Safeguarding

* Adhere to all data-protection processes, maintaining an active awareness of the sensitivity of young people’s data, Safeguarding
* Support organisational responsibility for safeguarding and planning for safe programmes
* Ensure all delivery follows best practice safeguarding standards, including adherence to individual organisation’s or school’s processes where relevant


Applicant Requirements

* Subject to a PVG check through Disclosure Scotland (and an enhanced DBS check if working in areas other than Scotland) with The Roots Programme. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974
* Two references, one from your current or most recent employer and another (if you have worked with young people that must be included)
* Strong, reliable wifi connection whilst working from home
* Agree to and sign our code of conduct
* You must have the right to work in the UK
* Undertake Child Protection in Schools training (or equivalent safeguarding certification)
* Be solely responsible for all tax liabilities (including National Insurance) arising in connection with fees paid to them as set out in the Freelance Facilitator Agreement
* Comply with relevant legislation and The Roots Programme policies, including Safeguarding and GDPR


Details of the role

* Flexible, remote working during term-time. This role will commence in September 2025. A short training will be provided remotely. Delivery will mainly occur during school hours. You will run activities and support community groups or young people, provide feedback, and assist with evaluation materials. Public speaking experience is essential. We are recruiting facilitators in Scotland; this role suits those with facilitation, teaching, community or youth work experience.


Experience

* Relevant experience in facilitating workshops for young people or community groups, or teaching experience within or outside formal school or youth work settings. Lived experience of challenges facing diverse groups is valued.


Location

* Events are conducted in partner schools or community settings with travel required. Some in-person touchpoints with the Roots team may occur. Availability depends on location and delivery day preferences, number of facilitators, and workshops per programme.


Fees and Benefits

* Daily rate of £230 for facilitation, invoiced as a freelancer
* Reimbursement for time involved in design process and wider team meetings/check-ins
* All reasonable travel expenses and overnight accommodation covered where required
* Quarterly wider team check-ins
