University assistant/associate professor in industrial engineering and operations management

Cambridge
Operations manager
Posted: 16 May
Offer description

Applications are invited for a tenure-track University Assistant/Associate Professorship in Industrial Engineering and Operations Management. The successful candidate will join the Engineering Department's Manufacturing and Management Division (also known as the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM) www.ifm.eng.cam.ac.uk ) and will be expected to make novel, significant, and impactful contributions to the IfM's industrially-engaged research within the domain of Industrial Engineering and Operations Management. The successful candidate will be expected to design and deliver research programmes on topics related to industrial engineering and operations management in application contexts that could include energy systems, healthcare systems, food systems, and/or other contexts of industrial need. The postholder will be expected to develop new research that complements existing work in the division and department with particular emphasis on applying industrial engineering and operations management concepts to support both the scaling-up of emerging technologies into new products and systems, and the deployment 'at scale' of existing technologies to improve organisational and system performance. The successful candidate will also be expected to fully contribute in the IfM's teaching activities and be an active contributor to both the operational aspects of the IfM and Department, and the IfM's wide range of public, industry and policy engagement activities. The Department of Engineering is one of the few truly integrated engineering departments in the world. It is also the largest department in the University of Cambridge, and this breadth and scale bring unique advantages. Within the Engineering Department, the IfM has a mission to 'help manufacture a better world' and does so through three strands of activity: educating the manufacturing leaders of tomorrow, new thinking about manufacturing; and putting those new ideas into practice today. The IfM takes a broad view of manufacturing, one that spans the whole process of converting ideas and opportunities into products and systems that improve lives. The IfM works across the full stack of manufacturing activities including technologies and processes, systems, organisations, and broader ecosystems. The post will be based at the IfM on the University's Cambridge West site, but with collaboration expected with other Groups and Divisions in the Engineering Department, other Departments in the University and more widely. The post holder will be expected to develop strong externally funded, globally recognised, industrially-engaged research programmes, and to participate in the teaching mission of the IfM as well as the wider Engineering Department. This process is expected to take place in August 2026. Informal enquiries may be made to Professor Ajith Parlikad ( aknp2@cam.ac.uk ) or Professor Tim Minshall ( thwm100@cam.ac.uk ) Please quote reference NM49071 on your application and in any correspondence about this vacancy.
