Health Care Support Worker – Paediatric Emergency Department
To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team providing high quality care to patients attending the Paediatric Emergency Department by assisting nursing and medical staff in performing clinical investigations set out in this job description. The post holder will predominantly work in the Paediatric Emergency Department but may be needed to assist in all acute areas, responding to departmental needs.
Reporting to the Shift Leader, the Health Care Support Worker will be allocated tasks by the area coordinator.

Responsibilities
* Use effective communication skills to interact with colleagues, patients, parents/carers and visitors.
* Gain appropriate consent from patients and parents/carers when carrying out procedures within role.
* Assist nursing and medical staff with the provision of health promotion, such as advice following procedures on discharge.
* Carry out routine observations: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, respiration rate on patients attending the Paediatric Accident & Emergency department, documenting all patient observations in accordance with department protocols.
* Carry out manual and machine analysis of urine samples, gaining consent for urinary HCG readings as required.
* Perform cannulation and venepuncture on patients as per Aseptic Non‑Touch Technique (ANTT) protocol, directed by the registered nurse or medical staff.
* Assist in treatments such as primary wound closure, Steri‑Strip, skin adhesive and application of Plaster of Paris splints in accordance with ANTT protocol.
Qualifications and Requirements
* Previous experience with children and acute hospital experience essential.
* Ability to work long day shifts, nights and weekends.
