The Paraeducator II assists the Teacher in the delivery of an instructional program, through preparation of the classroom and materials in order to assist individual and small groups of students. The Paraeducator II supports the planning and delivery of behavioral management and living skill development in a variety of school and life situations. The Paraeducator II supports and maintains individual student as well as classroom management while supporting teacher-designed methods and materials with or without direct teacher supervision. This allows the student the opportunity to function autonomously in a school, work, and/or community living environment. The incumbent will provide supervision of student activities to ensure that the school maintains a safe and orderly environment.

Job Description
PARAEDUCATOR II Purpose: The Paraeducator II assists the Teacher in the delivery of an instructional program, through preparation of the classroom and materials in order to assist individual and small groups of students. The Paraeducator II also supports the planning and delivery of behavioral management and living skill development in a variety of school and life situations. The Paraeducator II supports and maintains individual student as well as the classroom management while supporting teacher-designed methods and materials with or without direct teacher supervision. This allows the student the opportunity to function autonomously in a school, work, and/or community living environment. The incumbent will provide supervision of student activities in order to ensure that the school maintains a safe and orderly environment.
Nature & Scope: The Paraeducator II works with a variety of students with disabilities and/or needs ranging in age from five to twenty-one years in various educational locales such as school environments, specialized classrooms, the community, differing work settings, and on the bus. The incumbent functions independently for significant portions of the day performing work with students and providing supervision, life skills training, and direct instruction under the direction of the Teacher for students with a wide range of disabilities and/or needs. The interaction with students can be high-stakes and occasionally hostile or volatile, requiring a high level of professional decorum, calm, and ability to act as a role model to young people. The incumbent does not have adult supervisory responsibilities, but may provide guidance and assistance to regular or temporary employees, as required.
Essential Job Functions
* Conducts oneself in the best interest of students, in accordance with the highest traditions of public education and in support of the District’s mission.
* Assists in the academic instruction and presentation of instructional materials by individually working with small groups of students, or individual students.
* Reinforcing instruction; following up on specific language, spelling, reading, mathematics and other subject-area activities as directed by the Teacher.
* Monitoring and overseeing student tasks, practices and assignments in various subjects.
* Supports assistance in classroom assignments, homework, and projects.
* Independently implements individual and group behavior plans.
* Physically assists students in community-based activities offsite and accompanies students on school buses or public transportation as needed.
* Prepares and implements instructional materials using technology and assistive devices.
* Provides physical accommodation to students requiring assistance (e.g., moving in and out of mobility devices, lifting, assisting with orthopedic devices).
* Supports behavior management and maintains classroom discipline; guides students in understanding classroom rules and procedures.
* Assists students in developing emotional control, hygiene, and social discernment; coaches students during job performance and monitors attendance.
* Provides classroom support to the Teacher by setting up work areas, displays, and distributing materials.
* Convenes with teachers regarding lesson plans and materials to meet student needs.
* Supervises activities such as playground, cafeteria, bus loading, field trips, and other student gatherings.
* Prepares, administers, and scores various tests and assignments as directed.
* Takes data on student performance and records data into a computerized system when asked.
* Offers guidance and answers questions to students; may implement a Functional Living Program designed by the teacher to teach independent tasks.
* May provide structured training at community job sites aligned with vocational goals; helps develop transportation plans for travel to job sites.
* Performs clerical duties using basic office equipment and software; maintains student records and prepares reports as requested.
* Maintains confidentiality and professional relationships with staff, students, and parents from diverse backgrounds.
Required Qualifications
* Must possess an Associate’s degree (preferably with coursework in working with children in an educational setting).
* Alternatively: High school diploma or GED with a qualifying assessment demonstrating knowledge to assist in instructing reading, writing, and mathematics.
* District approved Oregon behavioral intervention training certificate, required before starting work and must be maintained.
* Understanding of child development; training/experience in instructional techniques and behavior management for disabled students desired.
* Effective communication skills; ability to collect data and perform basic mathematical functions; proficiency in English.
* Ability to operate standard office equipment; pass a criminal background check.
Licensing & Special Requirements
* Possess or obtain a valid Oregon or Washington driver’s license.
* Ability to travel to alternate locations to support students.
Working Conditions
The Paraeducator II works within classroom, school, community settings, and other areas where students may congregate. The role requires mobility indoors and outdoors, in variable weather conditions, and may involve significant physical duties and supervision of students with varying needs. Travel to multiple sites may be required.
