Offer description

DVLA bring an exciting opportunity for a Data Engineer to help design, build and run modern cloud-based data platforms and products that enable smarter decision-making. We are looking for technically skilled data enthusiasts from any relevant background being Data Engineering, Software Development, Analysis, or Data Science who have a passion for building high-quality, maintainable data services. £42,848 - £57,400 plus excellent Civil Service benefits and over 28% pension contribution. Flexible, hybrid working from Swansea, a great place to work, live and play with a healthy work-life balance on how and where you work.

About the role

As Data Engineers at DVLA we are part of the Government Digital and Data function, a community of experts leading digital transformation of government services affecting most of the people in the UK.

Data Engineers develop and operate data platform and data products enabling the agency to deliver its services and make better, data-driven decisions.

As a Senior Data Engineer you will be responsible for developing and maintaining our data platform and data products using the latest cloud technologies, whilst ensuring we follow and maintain industry standards and best practices. As a key member of the team you will provide support to users and other Data Engineers, including leadership and mentoring. You will be influential in the delivery of high quality, accurate data products.

As a Senior Data Engineer you will:

* Design and leads on the implementation of data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and Business Intelligence (BI) systems
* Recognise opportunities to reuse existing data flows
* Lead the build of data streaming systems
* Optimise the code to ensure processes perform optimally
* Lead work on database management
* Operate the production data processing services you build

About you

We welcome applications from anyone with relevant technical skills. For example, you could have a background in data or software engineering, analysis or data science. We are looking for data enthusiasts with a strong technical understanding and interest in engineering reliable and maintainable data products.

You will be experienced in a range of technologies including:

* Python & SQL languages
* Distributed data processing (eg Databricks, Apache Spark, AWS Glue)
* Data integration techniques (eg API, ELT/ETL)
* Decentralised version control systems (eg git, mercurial)
* Testing

You will also possess programming and build skills with the ability to deliver a reliable solution to a business problem.

With the ability to also combine multiple data sources into a single dataset or model to develop solutions and to use data analysis and synthesis to understand a problem.

During the interview we will ask you to work with a small codebase, a project written in Python and SQL. As it is the same project you will have received during screening, you will have time to familiarise yourself with the code. During the interview you will be able to use Google or Bing to help you solve the problem, but you will not be able to use AI coding assistance tools. We want to test your approach to solving problems in code more than memorisation of specific features of a given language.

Benefits

In return, you can expect a planned, transparent progression with learning and development tailored to your role, an environment with flexible working options and a culture encouraging inclusion and diversity, long-term career progression plus the following benefits:

* Salary of £42,848 to £57,400 (including a non-pensionable recruitment & retention allowance) dependent on technical skills as assessed at Interview
* Best in class learning and development tailored to your role
