About the Role
Corporation members attend corporation meetings (5 a year), committee meetings (ranging from 1 to 5 a year per committee), a strategic development day, training sessions and participate in governor engagement activities and attend events such as graduation ceremonies, celebrations, shows and performances.
Before each meeting, you will need to read several papers to be informed and ready to discuss items and make decisions. Preparation is crucial to being an effective governor. The ability to listen, analyse information, and ask questions are also key skills for governors to use and develop.
The role of governor can be very rewarding, as members of the board can, and do, make a real difference for the students, staff, communities, and employers we represent. It is challenging and interesting, and you will learn new skills and experience working with other board members and staff members. You will receive support from the Director of Governance and Chair of the Corporation.
About the Person
Expressions of interest are welcomed from talented and experienced individuals who have the time and energy to commit to the governor role. The group is inclusive and intends to have a broad range of expertise and backgrounds on the board, sharing knowledge, experience, and advice, while also offering diversity of thought and opinions.
Applications are welcomed from all interested individuals, over 18 years old. Particular interest will be given to applicants who have experience in the following areas:
* Legal
* Finance
* Human Resources
* IT
* Local strategic leadership
* Community Partnerships
* SEND
These areas were identified in our most recent audit of the skills of board members. To maintain the composition of the board, which reflects the local community we represent, we also encourage applications from those from minority ethnic backgrounds.
Whilst previous knowledge of governance is welcomed, training and support will be provided, and this is not a prerequisite for the role. Current board members have experience in local and national businesses, in education (Schools, FE and HE), in the public sector, in legal services, and finance.
There is a Lot to Celebrate Including
* Providing a good education to over 15,000 FE and 1,000 HE students.
* Consistently receiving high scores in student experience satisfaction surveys.
* Receiving a silver TEF Award, and a gold award for student experience (HE).
* A dedicated and hard‑working team of staff across our sites (approximately 1,180).
* Our new Skegness College campus.
* The creation of a new dedicated Animal Care Centre in Grimsby.
* Well managed finances and resources, with a 5‑year detailed maintenance plan including improvements to all sites and the creation of immersive rooms for students and staff to benefit from new and developing technologies.
* Strong employer links – the group is actively working with over 1,200 employers and is involved in several LSIP projects, supporting the development of skills and training to meet the identified priority skills needs in the regions we support.
