The Ted Ellis Trust, Wheatfen Nature Reserve, Surlingham. Norfolk. NR14 7AL Salary: £31,000 - £36,000 according to experience pension contributions Ready to shape the future of one of Norfolk’s most magical wild places? Wheatfen Nature Reserve (130 acres of fen, reed bed, woodland and open water) needs an experienced warden with vision, independence and the drive to lead a truly unique site. Wheatfen is waiting for a warden who sees not just what it is, but what it could be. About the Role Wheatfen is independently run and managed by the Ted Ellis Trust [Charity No.296966]. It was established to continue the legacy of the ‘people’s naturalist’ Ted Ellis. The reserve has a patchwork of habitats interspersed with a network of pathways that are open daily to the public to explore free of charge from sunrise to sunset. Wheatfen is home to many key wetland species including, swallowtail butterfly, otter, marsh pea and the scarce chaser dragonfly. The reserve has a long history of ecological research and is managed to a ten year management plan agreed with Natural England. The reserve has a well equipped Study Centre and Thatch Information Centre as well as a workshop and modern office. You are a creative communicator It’s hands‑on, season‑shifting, habitat‑shaping work where your decisions matter. Working Arrangements 37 hours per week, usually 08.00-16.00. Four weekdays plus Saturdays, exact weekly pattern is negotiable. Annual leave 28 days including Bank and public holidays The reserve warden reports to the Trustees of the Ted Ellis Trust and usually line manages an assistant trainee warden, plus an established group of volunteers. Employment subject to satisfactory checks, references and a 6 month probationary period. An Enhanced Disclosure and Debarring Service (DBS) certificate will be required. The successful candidate will have At least three years’ experience in leading a broad range of practical conservation, access and estate management tasks, particularly in fen and wetland habitats A good knowledge of wetland ecology, species identification and conservation management Certification and experience in the use and maintenance of a range of tools and equipment used for site management, including small workboats, chainsaws, winches, brush cutters, herbicide application, reciprocating mowers Experience in managing and working with volunteers and trainee wardens Emergency Aid (First Aid) Certificate Professional Tree Inspectors Qualification (PTI) A flexible approach and attitude to encompass a wide range of tasks and work throughout all seasons Strong public engagement skills and an ability to represent the Trust positively through a variety of communications and events A full clean UK driving licence A clear understanding of and experience in health and safety and risk assessments If you would like to discuss this post prior to applying, please contact Dan Hoare on 07961 903296 or Sally-Ann Meadows on 07770 948016 Closing date: 12pm Thursday 12 March 2026 Interview date: Friday 20 March 2026
