An opportunity has arisen to join our friendly, patient-focused, and forward-thinking team in a beautiful part of the country.
The appointee, together with existing colleagues, will be responsible for providing a comprehensive, efficient, and cost-effective clinical microbiology, virology, and infection prevention and control service to Wye Valley NHS Trust and other users of the service.
This post is a full-time (10 programmed activities) Consultant Microbiologist position at Wye Valley NHS Trust (WVT). This is a new role, increasing the consultant establishment to 3.6 WTE.
WVT is part of a programme board with Worcestershire exploring the benefits of a network. Currently, there is a microbiology laboratory on site at WVT. The ICD role is exclusively for WVT.
Candidates must be either GMC-registered medical practitioners or, if applying as a consultant clinical scientist, registered with the HCPC. The appointee is expected to hold FRCPath or MRCP qualifications or demonstrate equivalent training and experience.
Responsibilities include direct clinical care (DCC) and proactive liaison with consultant colleagues, hospital staff, microbiology colleagues, lead respiratory physicians for tuberculosis management, GPs, and the antimicrobial pharmacist. The sexual health service is outsourced to a private provider. There is a 0.5 WTE antimicrobial pharmacist, supported by an antimicrobial pharmacist technician.
The consultant microbiologists share clinical duties, including daily ITU ward rounds. They attend three MDTs: TB and NTM (every three months), prosthetic joint infections (monthly), and OPAT (weekly), which involves pharmacy and community nurses. The lead consultant retains clinical responsibility for patients. Infection consultants also alternate attendance at a biweekly multidisciplinary clinic for infected diabetic foot ulcers.
The antimicrobial stewardship lead attends the Medicines Safety Committee, chairs the biannual Antimicrobial Stewardship Committee, and meets monthly with the stewardship team. The head of department attends the pathology board.
The appointee will share departmental responsibilities according to their interests and expertise.
Wye Valley NHS Trust is part of an NHS Foundation Group with South Warwickshire NHS FT, George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust, and Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.
Located on the border with Wales, near the Black Mountains, the Trust provides acute and community services across Herefordshire and parts of Powys, including Hereford County Hospital and community hospitals in Bromyard, Leominster, and Ross-on-Wye.
The post requires travel between sites within Worcestershire.
