The Christie @ Macclesfield SACT services unit provides treatment to a variety of cancer diagnoses within solid tumor and Haematology. In the unit systemic anti‑cancer treatment (SACT) is administered IV, alongside supportive treatments such as blood and platelet transfusions. The team is seeking an enthusiastic SACT‑trained nurse to cover a 12‑month maternity leave and support the chemotherapy treatment of our patients.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multi‑disciplinary team and service users related to the specialty. Responsibilities include:
* Taking responsibility for all aspects of patient care, including assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of direct patient care.
* Leading delegated responsibilities as defined by the Senior Sister and Matron.
* Supporting the Senior Sister/Matron in monitoring the safety and quality of care.
* Co‑ordinating day‑to‑day management of the SACT unit.
* Collaborating between Christie sites across the Greater Manchester area as required.
* Managing, leading, and motivating Band 5, 4, and 3 staff, ensuring compliance with mandatory training and appraisal requirements.
* In the absence of the Senior Sister/Matron, assuming responsibility for day‑to‑day management of the SACT unit.
* Using patient feedback to maintain and improve patient care and foster a positive, focused service.
* Acting as an effective role model and promoting excellence through practice.

Job responsibilities
Clinical
1. Assessment of the needs of the patient and family, ensuring client‑centred care focusing on health promotion as well as illness.
2. Accurate documentation of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and standards.
3. Assessment of educational and informational needs of patient and family, providing up‑to‑date information enabling participation in care planning.
4. Enhancement of care within the clinical area by using relevant research outcomes when planning and delivering nursing care.
5. Evaluation of nursing care and informing Senior Sister and medical staff of patients’ changing healthcare needs.
6. Demonstration of competent skills as a role model for potential postholders, according to unit needs.
7. Maintenance of safe practice in accordance with Hospital Policies and Standards.
8. Ensuring all prescribed drugs and treatments are given in accordance with Hospital Policy.
9. Supporting solid tumour and haematology patient disease groups.
Managerial
1. When appropriate, in rotation with other Band 6 staff, taking charge of the ward in the absence of the Senior Sister to maintain standards of care and ward management.
2. Ensuring skill mix is appropriate to clinical needs and keeping Senior Nurse Managers aware of pertinent issues.
3. Fostering a supportive working environment and maintaining staff morale, promoting a culture where staff feel valued and can reach their potential.
4. Acting as a preceptor/mentor to new ward staff and pre‑ and post‑registered nurses.
5. Assisting the Senior Sister to ensure clinical standards of care are achieved and participating in audit of clinical care.
6. Being aware of responsibilities under the Health and Safety At Work Act.
7. Assisting the Senior Sister in initiating and implementing change, promoting professional accountability.
8. Assisting the Senior Sister with recruitment of new staff to the clinical area where appropriate.
9. Actively participating in Clinical Risk Assessments and ensuring correct documentation of Clinical Incidents in accordance with Hospital Policy.
10. Providing management support for SACT day services junior staff and acting as mentor to designated staff.
11. Taking a progressive approach to the management of short and long‑term sickness/absence in collaboration with the Department Manager/Senior Nursing team.
12. Regularly liaising and reporting to the Department Manager/Senior Nursing team on unit affairs and staff development.
Education
1. Maintaining awareness of current nursing practice and using educational opportunities to provide the highest standards of care to patients with cancer.
2. Supervising clinical staff and disseminating knowledge of current developments.
3. Participating in planned appraisal programmes with the Senior Sister.
4. Collaborating with the School of Nursing, teaching basic and post‑basic learners, and assessing training within NMC guidelines.
5. Completing the Ward Introductory Pack and Preceptor pack.
6. Completing relevant in‑house Level 1‑3b IV training and SACT programme (UKON passport) and ensuring regular updates.
7. Participating in research and audit influencing practice.
