Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us. The Trust wishes to appoint a Consultant in Histopathology, with an interest in pulmonary pathology and one or more of: gynaecological, GI/HPB and skin pathology. The role is available as either a permanent consultant position or a fixed term consultant contract for 6 to 12 months. The service covers the local Southampton population and regional referrals from around Wessex.
You will contribute to the established pulmonary pathology subspecialist team, plus at least one other, including reporting of histology and cytology specimens, dissection and MDTs. Other areas of interest, including autopsy work, can also be discussed. As the regional training centre, you will be involved in postgraduate teaching and training, with strong links to the University of Southampton for opportunities in undergraduate teaching.
The details of the job plan, workload and terms will be discussed with clinical leads.
Responsibilities
* Report histology and cytology specimens and participate in macroscopic dissection (including supervision of scientist-led dissection).
* Attend multidisciplinary team meetings and provide frozen section cover and rapid on-site evaluation in cytology clinics.
* Work within a regional cellular pathology team, contributing to pulmonary pathology and at least one other subspecialty, with flexibility across gynaecology pathology, breast pathology, skin pathology, GI and HPB pathology.
* Engage in autopsy work as discussed, and contribute to the postmortem service in a state-of-the-art mortuary.
* Work with digital pathology platforms and academic links to develop molecular pathology interests and AI initiatives as appropriate.
* Deliver teaching and supervision for residents, undergraduates, and specialist reporting/scientific dissection biomedical scientists; participate in rotation-based DCC activities.
* Contribute to service planning and rota management, including share in cover arrangements for colleagues during absence or annual leave (subject to approvals).
Qualifications
* Be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC).
* Be eligible to work as a Consultant in England under the appropriate terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.
* Demonstrate an interest in pulmonary pathology with potential engagement in related subspecialties.

* Job plan: to be agreed prior to taking up the post; an expected 10 PAs typically split as 8 DCC to 2 SPA, with no on-call commitment unless otherwise agreed. Direct clinical care activities include microscopic reporting, dissection, MDTs, and cytology.

* Postmortem service opportunities; state-of-the-art mortuary with general adult, paediatric and neuropathology postmortem capabilities for coroner’s and hospital work.
