Join to apply for the Mechanical Design Engineer role at Nium

Nium is a UK-based climate tech company, founded in 2022 with a clear and ambitious mission: to eliminate emissions at scale by disrupting the global ammonia production market.

Ammonia is one of the world's most essential chemicals, supporting approximately 50% of global food production as fertiliser. However, its conventional production process is a significant climate challenge, accounting for around 1.3% of global CO₂ emissions and 2% of the world's energy use.

We employ nanotechnology and advanced engineering to produce clean ammonia, unlocking its potential as a zero-carbon fuel for the future. Our goal is specific and bold: by producing 2 million tonnes of clean ammonia by 2032, we will have avoided 10 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions. To achieve this, we are looking for mission-driven, talented people to help us accelerate our progress.

Role

Ready to be at the forefront of climate action and drive real change? We're seeking a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer, passionate about first-of-a-kind technology, to join our dynamic team in Milton Park. You'll primarily focus on design and deployment of our upcoming pilot plant, reporting to our Lead Process Engineer. This role involves close collaboration with external consultants and diverse internal teams, transforming innovative ideas into practical realities, and contribute to the continuous improvement of our laboratory operations.

What you will do (Key responsibilities)

* Lead Pilot Plant Mechanical Design: Work with external consultants to drive the mechanical design of our innovative ammonia synthesis pilot. This will involve everything from conceptualisation to detailed design and specification of key components such as compressors, pressure vessels, heat exchangers and piping systems.
* Support Laboratory Testing: Provide essential mechanical design support for our catalyst production and testing activities. You’ll identify opportunities for process improvements and standardisation to optimise R&D efforts and support operational reliability.
* Collaborate and Innovate: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists, contributing your expertise to solve complex challenges and push the boundaries of our technology.
* Documentation and Analysis: Create detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and reports. Conduct mechanical stress analysis, fluid dynamics simulations and calculations to ensure robust and cost-efficient designs.
* Vendor Liaison: Support the selection and management of suppliers for mechanical components and systems, and assist with the preparation of contract documentation.
* Safe Work: Help to foster a safe working environment within our facilities, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and industry best-practice.

You will have:

* A recognised Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
* While we're open to exceptional recent graduates, ideally you'll have at least 2 years of professional design experience, preferably in a chemical plant, process industry or related industrial context.
* Proven Experience with CAD software (SolidWorks, Inventor, AutoCAD) for both 2D and 3D mechanical design. This should include a track record of delivering detailed engineering drawings, complex assemblies, and functional prototypes.
* A passion for our climate-focused mission: decarbonised and decentralised ammonia production
* Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail and a proactive approach; identifying challenges and proposing effective engineering solutions.
* Ability to communicate effectively within diverse teams in a project setting.
* Be willing and able to travel periodically, both domestically and internationally, to support plant installation and commissioning.
* The right to work in the UK.

Highly Desirable:

* Prior experience with mechanical design for processes involving hazardous gas handling, high-temperature and -pressure pressure vessels or chemical reactors
* Experience working in a fast-paced start-up environment or with new & emerging technologies
* Direct experience using advanced simulation tools such as CFD and FEA, particularly relevant for pressure vessel and piping design
* Experience designing to UK and international standards of relevance to chemical process plant, including ASME B31.3, ASME Section VIII, BS EN 13445 & PSSR

What We Offer & Our Culture

This isn't a predictable corporate role. We offer the chance to do meaningful work that has a direct impact on our mission and the planet. You will be given real responsibility, the autonomy to solve challenging problems, and the opportunity to grow with a company at a critical stage of its journey.

In addition to a competitive salary and meaningful equity, we provide everything you need to succeed and thrive:

* Professional Development: A £1,000 annual budget for your professional growth.
* Financial Wellbeing: A generous pension scheme with up to 8% matched contributions.
* Work-Life Balance: Hybrid and flexible working arrangements to suit your needs. For this specific role, this includes flexibility in start/finish times, with the understanding that the hands-on, lab-based work will need to be conducted on-site.
* Excellent Facilities: Access to cutting-edge equipment in our purpose-built labs and R&D centre at Milton Park.
* Tools for Success: A new laptop and any other hardware you require.
* Supportive Environment: Compassionate and encouraging managers and a team dedicated to helping you do the most rewarding work of your life.

We are committed to building an inclusive environment where diverse perspectives are valued. We hire for "cultural add," not "cultural fit," because we believe diversity of thought and healthy debate are essential for a disruptive business.

Ultimately, our focus is locked on the mission. We believe that tackling the climate crisis requires bringing together talented people from every background to work alongside each other for a better tomorrow.
