Apprentice Business Support Officer (Public Health)
Post Ref: CC556
Calderdale Council is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our dynamic Public Health team as a Business Support Apprentice. Following the success of our previous apprentice, who has progressed into a career within public health, this role offers valuable real-world experience for someone with a genuine interest in protecting and improving the health and wellbeing of the people of Calderdale.
About the Role
This apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity to learn and develop core administrative and business support skills within a professional and supportive team. You’ll be working across a variety of work areas within Public Health, supporting services and programmes that tackle the root causes of ill health and that enable people to look after their health and wellbeing, stay safe, and live well. The Public Health team plays a key role in the Council and is organised using a ‘People and Places’ approach and delivers a number of functions that are mandated by the Government including commissioning of public health services for children and young people, drug and alcohol services, sexual health services, undertaking a strategic assessment of the health and wellbeing needs of Calderdale people, and providing public health support to the local NHS.
As a Business Support Apprentice, your tasks will include responding to emails and managing diaries (including complex scheduling), purchasing and payment tasks using a database. Organising and supporting meetings, including taking notes and following up on actions. Providing excellent customer service to colleagues, partners, and the public and supporting teams at various locations across Calderdale, as required.
We’re seeking someone who is organised, proactive, and able to manage their own workload effectively. A clear and confident communicator, both verbally and in writing. They should be detail-oriented and committed to delivering high standards of work. They will be someone willing to learn and develop new skills in a fast-paced environment. A genuine interest in public health and community wellbeing is preferred. This is more than an admin role—it’s an opportunity to be part of a team making a real difference across Calderdale.
Location
You will be based in central Halifax but you must have the ability to travel to various locations across the borough to support the various services within Public Health as and when service need arises. The public health team is committed to working in ways that reduce our impact on climate change, so meetings and events are organised to be accessible using public transport.
There will be flexibility to work from home after initial induction but there may be a requirement for you to work from an identified location on a full-time basis.
The Successful applicant will
• Study towards a Level 3 Business Administrator qualification
• Gain hands-on experience in a respected public sector team
• Have supportive mentoring and guidance throughout the apprenticeship
• Get a strong foundation for future roles in business support and/or public health
Closing Date: Sunday 14th September
Interview Date: w/c 22nd September
The interviews will take place at Princess Buildings in Halifax.
