An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Workshop Operations Manager to join our Hampshire Transport Management (HTM) team at Hampshire County Council.

The Role:
As Workshop Operations Manager, you will be responsible for the efficient and compliant operation of multiple vehicle workshops across Hampshire. You’ll ensure all workshops meet the highest standards of safety, regulatory compliance, and service delivery. You’ll provide direct management cover during absences, oversee day-to-day operations, and support Workshop Managers and Master Technicians to deliver excellent results.
You’ll play a key role in staff development, performance monitoring, and continuous improvement, as well as supporting the HTM Fleet Manager and collaborating with internal and external partners.
Working hours are predominantly Monday- Friday with the possibility the role could become permanent.
What you’ll do:
* Lead and manage a network of workshops, ensuring compliance with Health & Safety, COSHH, and all legal frameworks
* Oversee equipment calibration, maintenance, and staff training to maintain high standards
* Act as the main point of contact for Workshop Managers, supporting technical issue resolution and resource planning
* Coordinate holiday cover and ensure effective management presence across all sites
* Monitor and report on workshop performance, compliance, and financial viability
* Support the development and implementation of performance monitoring tools
* Oversee staff development, including apprenticeships and ongoing training
* Liaise with customers, manufacturers, and contractors to resolve technical queries and maintain service excellence
* Plan and oversee winter maintenance and emergency standby arrangements
What we’re looking for:
* Strong people management and leadership skills, with experience in workshop or fleet management
* Up-to-date knowledge of Health & Safety, Duty of Care, and transport legal requirements
* Excellent communication and customer liaison skills
* Proficiency in fleet management systems and Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
* Ability to analyse operational data and produce clear, actionable reports
* Experience in coaching and developing teams and driving continuous improvement
* Adaptability, resilience, and effective decision-making under pressure
