Role Overview

We are seeking a resilient, empathetic, and highly motivated Behaviour Mentor to join an inclusive secondary school with a dedicated inclusion base in Southcote, Reading. This role is particularly suited to individuals who are passionate about working with students who require alternative or additional support to thrive within education.

As a Behaviour Mentor, you will support pupils who find it challenging to manage their behaviour, emotions, or engagement within a mainstream school environment. Many of the students supported through the inclusion base may have experienced repeated difficulties in education, including exclusion, disrupted schooling, or complex personal circumstances.

Your role will be to provide stability, structure, and consistent adult support, helping students rebuild confidence, develop emotional regulation skills, and re-engage positively with learning.

-----------------------------------

Purpose of the Behaviour Mentor Role

The purpose of this Behaviour Mentor role is to support students who are at risk of exclusion or disengagement by offering tailored behavioural and emotional interventions. The school is committed to reducing exclusions and improving long-term outcomes through relationship-based and trauma-informed approaches.

Behaviour Mentors play a vital role in supporting students within the inclusion base, as well as facilitating reintegration into mainstream lessons where appropriate. This role requires patience, flexibility, and a strong belief in the potential of every student.

Key Responsibilities

As a Behaviour Mentor in Southcote, your responsibilities will include:

* Providing 1:1 behaviour mentoring for students within the inclusion base

* Delivering small group interventions focusing on emotional regulation, self-awareness, and social skills

* Supporting students during reintegration into mainstream lessons

* Assisting students during transitions, break times, and lunch periods

* De-escalating challenging behaviour calmly and professionally

* Supporting students during moments of emotional distress or dysregulation

* Contributing to the development and implementation of individual behaviour plans

* Working closely with inclusion staff, teachers, SENCOs and senior leaders

* Monitoring progress and maintaining detailed behaviour records

* Supporting restorative conversations and reflection following incidents

* Upholding safeguarding procedures and maintaining professional boundaries

-----------------------------------

The School Environment

Located in Southcote, this school serves a diverse community and has invested significantly in its inclusion provision. The school recognises that some students require alternative approaches to succeed and has developed a strong, structured inclusion base to meet these needs.

The leadership team is highly supportive and values the work of Behaviour Mentors in creating positive change for vulnerable students. Staff are provided with training, supervision, and opportunities to develop their skills in behaviour support and emotional wellbeing.

The school adopts restorative, trauma-informed practices, focusing on understanding the underlying causes of behaviour and supporting long-term change.

Students You Will Support

Students supported by the Behaviour Mentor may:

* Display persistent challenging behaviour

* Have SEMH needs, ADHD, or attachment difficulties

* Experience emotional dysregulation or anxiety

* Have a history of exclusion or poor attendance

* Struggle to engage with mainstream education

Your role is to help these students feel safe, understood, and supported, enabling them to develop trust in education and in themselves.

Who This Role Is Ideal For

This role is well-suited to individuals who:

* Have experience working with young people in alternative provision, PRUs, or inclusion settings

* Are calm, patient, and emotionally resilient

* Can manage challenging behaviour confidently and compassionately

* Are flexible and adaptable in their approach

* Are passionate about inclusion and second chances
