This is an exciting opportunity to join the Alcohol Care Team (ACT) at the OUH Trust. We are seeking to recruit a dynamic, proactive, and organised individual who has an interest in addiction and a passion for improving patient care. This role has been developed to support the continuation of a pilot project that will focus on delivering care to patients within the Emergency Department (ED).
The Alcohol Care Team is a hospital-based service that covers all four OUH sites (John Radcliffe, Churchill, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, and the Horton hospital). The team was created to improve the identification and treatment of patients that are drinking at harmful or hazardous levels. The team has a focus on the improvement of alcohol withdrawal treatment and the facilitation of referrals to primary care and the delivery of staff education. Flexible working will be required as this post will support both the John Radcliffe ED and the Horton ED.
This practitioner will be responsible for the screening and assessment of patients who are drinking at harmful/hazardous levels. They will provide harm reduction advice and psycho-social interventions to patients who are drinking at harmful levels. They will work alongside senior members of the team to ensure timely and efficient data collection to build a case for future funding.
This is a fixed term contract/secondment opportunity until the st March
Main duties of the job
·The recruit will work closely with a team of nurses and clinical staff to continue the delivery of the ACT project within ED
·The practitioner will be responsible for screening patients and identifying those at risk from alcohol related health and social problems
·The practitioner will use their knowledge and experience to holistically assess patients who present to the hospital with alcohol related issues
·They will provide appropriate advice around harm reduction and motivational support and brief advice
·Liaise closely with community drug and alcohol services. The practitioner will be responsible for facilitating referrals to internal and external services to meet the needs of the individual
·Feel confident in liaising with nurses and doctors to ensure effective communication and ensure that every contact counts
·Help colleagues deliver a staff training programme to improve identification /brief advice and the treatment of alcohol withdrawal
·Assist the team with the ACT telephone clinic which ensures patient follow up once discharged from the department
·They will work in conjunction with the nursing team but will demonstrate the ability to work autonomously within their scope of practice
