Overview
We would like to welcome an experienced RGN Qualified General Practice Nurse to join our team at Health and Beyond. Our organisation is a large, friendly team consisting of doctors, nurses, health care assistants, advanced clinical practitioners, clinical pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, care coordinators, health and wellbeing coaches, receptionists, secretaries, IT and administration staff. GP trainees from Birmingham University also join us. The nursing team is well established and supportive.
Key clinical areas include Childrens Immunisations, Cervical Screening, Travel Health, Wound Management and an understanding of the QOF. Chronic Disease Management is an advantage but not essential.
Job responsibilities
Our General Practice Nurse will work independently as well as being an excellent team player and must be able to work under pressure. Previous experience using EMIS Web is desirable but not essential; full training will be provided.
* Ensure clinical practice is safe and effective, remains within boundaries of competence and acknowledges limitations following the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice.
* Advise patients on general health care and refer to other members of the primary and secondary health care team as necessary.
* Provide assessment, screening, treatment services and health education advice, including:
o Chronic Disease Management/Review (Diabetes, Respiratory)
o Cervical Cytology
o Dietary advice
o Blood pressure checks
o Urinalysis
o Health screening/NHS Health Checks
o Ear syringing
o Dressings
o ECG, Phlebotomy and routine injections
o Contraception
o Minor injuries and travel health advice with vaccination
o Routine immunisations and vaccinations (including baby immunisations)
o Removal of sutures/ clips
o Assisting with fitting of IUCD/IUS
o First registration checks / health surveillance / general health advice
o Assisting with minor procedures in the treatment room
o Organisation & coordination of nursing services, delegating duties to team members as appropriate
o Provision of general and specific health screenings to patients (within agreed protocols)
o Any other task/duty allocated by the Lead Nurse within professional competencies.
* Collect pathological specimens (intravenous blood samples, swabs, smears etc.) and perform investigatory procedures requested by GPs.
* Participate in administrative and professional responsibilities, ensuring accurate and legible notes, maintaining clinical computer records, making service claims, attending meetings, restocking and maintaining clinical areas.
* Minor operations support: manage theatre and recovery suite, assist doctors, report issues to practice manager.
* Maintain supplies and equipment related to patient care.
* Training and personal development: monitor requirements, support peer education, maintain a Personal Learning Plan, provide in‑house training programme, maintain revalidation requirements, and remain up‑to‑date with professional developments.
* Liaison: coordinate with reception, office & pharmacy staff, and external agencies.
Qualifications & skills
* Registered General Nurse with current NMC Registration.
* Experience post‑registration (minimum 2 years) in general practice.
* Fundamentals in General Practice Nursing (or equivalent).
* Knowledge of Childhood Immunisation, Cervical Cytology, Travel Health & Vaccinations, General Nursing duties and teaching.
* Strong communication, organisational and computer skills.
* Experience with QOF, PGDs, EMIS Web, clinical governance, risk management and audit.
* Experience in chronic disease management (Diabetes or Respiratory) and quality improvement.
* Qualified to prescribe non‑medical treatments (optional).
* Eligibility to work in the UK.
