Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Registered General Nurse to undertake a band 7 nurse practitioner role or paramedic practitioner fixed‑term role in Garston Urgent Treatment Centres.

The UTC assesses and treats patients with minor illness and injuries. It is open 8am to 8/8.30pm, 7 days per week. The service is nurse‑led and offers both an appointment and a walk‑in service.

Responsibilities

* Work within a team as an autonomous practitioner and be accountable for the health‑care management of the client/patient group.
* Perform holistic assessments to interpret, diagnose, and treat patients, concluding to discharge with an appropriate outcome or determining the most relevant pathway.
* Take charge of the shift and manage service provision in the absence of the Clinical Nurse Manager / Team Leader.
* Show commitment to the support and development of others to ensure a consistent, high‑quality delivery of service under the Personal Performance Planning process and Clinical Supervision.
* Ensure delivery of the quality strategy within the designated area, incorporating establishment of systems and processes.
* Lead and promote the clinical effectiveness of a high‑quality service in the unpredictable environment of the Walk‑in Centre using a multi‑skilled team approach.
* Maintain effective multidisciplinary team working and communication, utilising referral pathways.
* Coordinate the day‑to‑day running of the clinical area including shift‑lead responsibilities.
* Provide leadership and exercise a professional advisory role in relation to clinical practice.
* Continue to extend the scope of own professional practice by improving and enhancing knowledge and competencies.
* Report sickness and absence, accidents, incidents, and complaints to the Clinical Nurse Manager, taking immediate action to manage the safe running of the shift.
* Provide high‑quality, evidence‑based care and advice to all patients attending the Walk‑in Centre.
* Work autonomously and provide holistic assessment, interpretation of results, treatment, advice, and health promotion, resulting in discharge or referral of patients as appropriate.
* Develop knowledge of a wide range of minor illness and injuries, achieving competencies in all areas of Walk‑in Centre work to assess, treat, discharge, and refer appropriately.
* Support the professional development of peers and junior staff, developing and achieving competencies and working towards autonomous practitioner status.
* Demonstrate a positive commitment to the teaching, training, assessment, and development of all nurse learners.
* Supervise Band 6 Nurse Practitioners, Band 5 Associate Nurse Practitioners and Health Care Assistants.
* Act as a mentor/teacher to peers, other team members and all students including nursing and other professional disciplines.
* Work flexibly to support all Walk‑in Centres, ensuring capacity meets service demand and initiating escalation policy procedures as appropriate.
* Work within the scope of professional practice while providing an integrated primary care service by initiating and working collaboratively with other key stakeholders to ensure continuity of patient care.
* Support the Clinical Team Leader and contribute to developing new ways of working to provide a responsive service to patients’ needs.
* Exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy and critical judgement.
* Utilise proven skills in x‑ray, wound assessment and management, suturing, and the management of a wide range of minor injuries/ailments.
* Empower others and demonstrate an ability to make effective clinical decisions based on recent evidence.
* Assist in the development and implementation of policies, procedures and guidance relating to nursing practice and ensure clinically effective health interventions are provided utilising the latest available evidence.
* Maintain legal understanding of professional accountability and responsibility.
* Administer medication following training under patient group direction or as a nurse prescriber as clinically indicated.
* Be responsible for specialist diagnostic procedures and subsequent out‑of‑hours management of patients as outlined in local service plans.
* Adhere to NMC Standards of Practice and maintain skills and competencies required for the post.
* Utilise relevant training and experience in assessing, diagnosing, treating and managing patients, including wound management, venepuncture, vaccinations, health promotion and V300.
* Communicate effectively with patients and their relatives or carers, providing or receiving highly complex, sensitive or contentious information where significant barriers exist.
* Support the efficient use of physical and equipment resources.
* Adhere to all administrative policies and procedures within the service, and maintain familiarity with relevant IT systems and security procedures.
* Use the clinical system for electronic record‑keeping and communicate via email as required.


Qualifications & Skills

* Registered General Nurse (or Paramedic) with proven skills in x‑ray, wound management, suturing, and diagnostics.
* Experience in assessment and management of minor injuries/ailments and competent in venepuncture, vaccinations and health promotion.
* Adherence to NMC Standards of Practice.
* Proficient in electronic record‑keeping systems and IT security policies.
* Ability to work autonomously and lead shifts within a walk‑in centre environment.
* Strong communication and teaching skills to support and develop junior staff and peers.


Working Conditions

Flexible working requests will be considered. The service operates 7 days a week, open to 8/8.30pm. The role involves moderate physical effort for short periods during the shift, frequent use of VDU equipment and patient interaction.
