Overview

Healthcare Support Worker - Outpatients, University Hospitals Dorset NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 05 October 2025.

An exciting opportunity has arisen within UHDs Outpatients department at Poole, to join our highly diverse and motivated team looking after children and adults in both clinical and surgical settings.

Outpatients is a large part of the patient pathway, whether it is their first appointment, a follow up appointment or a minor surgical procedure. Our nursing is there to support them throughout the patient journey.

If you have excellent communication skills and really care about supporting patients within a clinic or surgical setting we have a brilliant opportunity within our friendly outpatients team.

This post is being advertised as a Band 3, however applicants that do not meet the required care certificate competencies will initially be employed as a Band 2. Applicants who hold a care certificate accreditation will start in post at Band 3.

As part of the interview process you will be asked to complete a numeracy and literacy assessment.

Base Location: Poole Hospital

Job responsibilities

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Good standard of numeracy and Literacy
* Completion of a competency-based workbook (Care Certificate) or equivalent relevant experience to vocational level 3.


Experience

* Ability to adapt and learn in healthcare environment
* Previous experience of working within a care environment /NHS
* Experience of working as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Experience of working with the public


technical skills / Competencies

* Ability to communicate clearly and effectively (to understand and be understood)
* Ability to follow clear instruction and feed back to senior staff.
* Ability to work as part of a team, as well as on own initiative
* IT literate
* Understanding of basic physiology e.g. normal vital signs, fluid balance, nutritional requirements etc.
* Venepuncture
* Simple wound dressings
* Performing ECGs


Knowledge

* An understanding around basic patient care
* Understanding of the importance of the promotion of health and well-being
* Knowledge of care and related procedures, clinical observations, relevant legislation;
* Have an understanding of ENT, Oral maxillofacial and ophthalmology clinics


Other requirements specific to role

* Ability to communicate with all levels of staff
* Ability to exchange factual information accurately
* Ability to deal with sensitive situations
* Ability to deal with difficult patient/ relatives and clinicians
* Is adaptable to to different clinical areas
