Residential Home Reports to: Registered Manager / Deputy Manager
Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience)
Hours: Shift-based (including evenings, weekends, sleep-ins/waking nights as required
Job Purpose
The Support Worker will provide high-quality, child-centred care and support to children and young people with Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (EBD) living in a residential setting. The role focuses on safeguarding, promoting emotional wellbeing, supporting positive behaviour, and helping children achieve stability, independence, and positive outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
* Build positive, trusting relationships with children and young people
* Safeguard and promote the welfare of children in line with legislation and procedures
* Support emotional regulation and manage challenging behaviour using therapeutic and de-escalation approaches
* Assist with personal care, daily routines, and maintaining a homely environment
* Encourage participation in education, activities, and community engagement
* Maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with professionals
* Ensure health, safety, medication, and risk management procedures are followed
Person Specification
Essential
* Experience working with children or young people with EBD, trauma, or challenging behaviour OR strong transferable skills.
* A genuine commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
* Ability to remain calm, resilient, and professional under pressure.
* Good written and verbal communication skills.
* Willingness to work shifts, including weekends and nights.
* Enhanced DBS check (Children’s Barred List) – required.
* Desirable
* NVQ Level 3 or 4 in Children and Young People (or willingness to work towards).
* Experience in residential children’s homes.
* Training in trauma-informed care, de-escalation, or PBS.
* Knowledge of the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015
Training & Development
* Comprehensive induction programme.
* Ongoing mandatory and specialist training (Safeguarding, EBD, Trauma, Behaviour Management).
* Regular supervision and annual appraisal.
