An exciting opportunity has arisen at Moorfields Stratford for a Specialist Grade Doctor for the Medical Retina Service.
This role offers a full timetable with a total of ten sessions with face to face outpatient sessions, Laser and injections.
Moorfields is one of the world’s leading eye hospitals, providing expertise in clinical care, research and education. We have provided excellence in eye care for more than 200 years and we continue to be at the forefront of new breakthroughs and developments. We are an integral part of one of the UK’s first academic health science centres, UCL Partners, and recently celebrated five years as one of the country’s first NHS foundation trusts.
Our main focus is the treatment and care of NHS patients with a wide range of eye problems, from common complaints to rare conditions which require treatments not available anywhere else in the UK. The unique case- mix and volume of our larger services means that our surgeons can develop expertise in different areas of the sub-specialty.
Our 1,800 staff treat and provide support for patients at our main hospital base in London’s City Road and at 20 other sites in and around the capital, which enables us to provide expert treatment closer to patients’ homes.
Main duties of the job
The post holder has a continuing responsibility for the care of patients and for the proper functioning of the service, allowing for all appropriate delegation to and training staff.
The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of clinics and must ensure that in/out patient services are covered during their planned absences. Participation in episodes of shared care requires the specialist to provide advice and support to clinicians in other services with regard to patients who may have a combination of ocular problems.
All members of the consultant staff and honorary consultants are expected to contribute to the Medical Advisory Committee and to serve on other Hospital committees as required unless compelling reasons prevent this. All members of the consultant staff will be expected to participate in audit meetings.
All members of staff are expected to participate in clinical governance and audit, to meet annual training requirements, and to satisfy the annual requirement for continuous professional development set out by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. All staff will participate in the Trusts’ appraisal scheme. The specialist will be expected to teach postgraduate medical practitioners and all levels of staff as required in both Hospital and Institute of Ophthalmology courses.

As a measure of our success, more patients than ever before chose us for their ophthalmic health care and in 2010/14, we recorded almost 500,000 outpatient attendances in our clinics and 74,000 attendances at our specialist A&E department. We carried out nearly 30,000 inpatient and day-case procedures, more than 8,500 laser treatments and around 10,000 treatment procedures for age-related macular degeneration. We continue to improve the quality of our services and me the key operational targets that matter to our patients, referrers, and commissioners. We delivered a financial surplus of £10 million, maintaining our long-term viability, while the organisation continues to evolve to meet the changing healthcare environment and the challenging economic climate
Moorfields has contracts with more than 80 primary care trusts across the country, making us a truly national centre for eye care.
We are also a major postgraduate teaching centre and a national centre for ophthalmic research involving, with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, the largest ophthalmic research programme in the world. We are one of only 11 sites nationally to be awarded National Institute for Health Research biomedical research centre status for translational research. This has recently been renewed for another 5 years through national competition. Established in April 2007, the Centre is funded by the Department of Health via the National Institute for Health Research.

* FRCOphth / MRCOphth or equivalent ophthalmic qualification
* Higher Degree (MD/PhD)
Training
* wide experience in the glaucoma subspecialty
* Further qualification in glaucoma
* Accredited fellowship in glaucoma
* Further qualifications/ accredited training in management or leadership
Skills
* Excellent teaching & presentation skills
