Rotherham Ethnic Minority Alliance (REMA)

Job Description

Job Purpose and context:

This role is central to leading grassroots community engagement, with a particular focus on supporting the Upstanders Not Bystanders programme. The postholder will coordinate local activities and events, while building strong, trusted relationships with community members and partner organisations. Through this work, the role contributes directly to efforts to reduce social division, challenge prejudice and misinformation, and promote inclusion, resilience, and mutual understanding across diverse communities.

REMA is a long established local charity focused on supporting BAME (Black and Minority Ethnic Communities) in Rotherham. Its purpose is to reduce inequalities and support minority communities to thrive in the UK.

The role will be embedded in our joint partnership team along with colleagues from Rotherfed.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Engage and build relationships with BAME individuals, families, and grassroots groups in target communities including Maltby, Dinnington, Eastwood, and the Town Centre.

Recruit, train, and support volunteers to become “Upstanders” – local champions who promote cohesion and challenge harmful narratives.

Co-ordinate community workshops, dialogue sessions, and local events that promote shared learning, inclusion, and intercultural understanding.

Facilitate or support “Walk a Mile in My Shoes”, myth-busting, and cultural awareness sessions.

Identify emerging issues, tensions, or community concerns and work with colleagues to develop responsive and appropriate interventions.

Support people with lived experience of discrimination or exclusion to participate in shaping activities and solutions.

Collaborate with Rotherfed and other delivery partners to ensure seamless service delivery and strong referral pathways.

Maintain accurate monitoring data, case studies, and impact stories to contribute to ongoing evaluation and project learning.

Represent REMA at local networks, forums, and partnership meetings where appropriate.

Uphold REMA’s values of equity, respect, and empowerment in all work.

Whilst every effort has been made to outline all the main duties and responsibilities of the post, a document such as this does not permit every item to be specified in detail. Also the post holder may, from time to time, be asked to undertake other reasonable duties commensurate with the grading of the post.

In addition to undertaking the duties as outlined above, the post holder will be expected to fully adhere to the following:

1.Equality
Act in accordance with the organisation’s Equality Policy, which is designed to prevent discrimination of any kind, and ensure equality of opportunity is a key principle that is continually embraced.

2.Operational
Ensure that all duties are carried out in line with the organisation’s health and safety, operational, performance management, personnel, data protection, and financial regulations policies and procedures.

3.Corporate Image
Adopt a professional image at all times.

4.Confidentiality
Maintain absolute confidentiality with regard to the organisation’s information and procedures.
