The role
As a Deputy FPAG Chair, you’ll be at the heart of ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of our radioactive waste facilities and mobile assets. This is a unique opportunity to work in a highly regulated, high-impact environment where precision and compliance are critical. Your decisions will directly contribute to national security and the smooth running of submarine programmes, while advancing your career in one of the most respected sectors in engineering and defence.
Day-to-day, you’ll take responsibility for authorising and releasing critical procedures that govern the maintenance and repair of facilities and mobile assets, ensuring every activity is carried out safely and securely. Your role will safeguard compliance with Plant Safety Case limits and conditions, while preserving the facility’s design intent and operational integrity.
1. Chair reviews of maintenance and operational documents, ensuring compliance with safety cases
2. Provide leadership and guidance to Configuration Engineers and Infrastructure Control Officers
3. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators
4. Drive a strong health and safety culture across operations
5. Champion continuous improvement to enhance safety and efficiency
This role is full time, 35 hours per week and is based on site at Devonport Royal Dockyard.
Essential experience of the Deputy FPAG Chair
6. Facilities operations and maintenance experience
7. Background in nuclear, radioactive or high hazard industries
8. Proven leadership and stakeholder engagement skills
9. Understanding of plant safety cases in high hazard environments
10. Knowledge of conventional health and safety requirements
Qualifications for the Deputy FPAG Chair
11. Level 6 qualification in a relevant discipline (or Level 4 with significant experience)
12. Health & Safety qualification (e.g. IOSH or NEBOSH)

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Security Check (SC) / Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information (NNPPI) security clearance for this role.
