Job Overview

Our 999 Emergency Call Handlers (Emergency Medical Advisors) are people just like you: people who have come from all walks of life, from different backgrounds and age groups, with the same things in common.

You are the first point of contact for patients who call 999 in an emergency.

Why apply for this role?

As a SECAmb 999 Emergency Call Handler you will be the first point of contact and are responsible for ensuring the correct information is obtained from the caller, while offering advice or reassurance under difficult circumstances. You will record details of the patient and their condition in a computer system, which categorises the seriousness of their illness or injury so the patient receives the most appropriate care.

What makes a great 999 Emergency Call Handler?

* All caring and empathetic
* Great communication skills
* Happy and able to work flexibly

Main duties

Enter details into the computer system about the patient and their condition which categorises the seriousness of their illness or injury. Ensure the patient receives the most appropriate care from the NHS: an emergency ambulance response, a telephone assessment by a clinician, a referral to an alternative care pathway or self‑care advice.

Provide full training in a warm, friendly environment in our Emergency Call Centres.

Training Programme

* 9 weeks full time training
* Full‑time training even for part time applicants
* Mandatory attend policy to obtain the Pathways licence
* 3 weeks of Monday to Friday classroom training followed by 6 weeks of observing and mentoring before you go “live”
* This is a fully office–based role at our NHS 111/999 contact centres in Medway, Kent or Crawley, West Sussex. Due to 24/7 shift patterns, including nights, applicants must live within approximately 45‑60 minutes’ commuting distance (applications outside this distance will not be progressed).

Working hours

As a 24/7 service this role will involve a varied shift pattern: early, late, night and weekend shifts on a rota pattern. Rotas are fixed to ensure safe provision to patients. If you have a requirement to work nights only, this can also be catered for.

Benefits & Pay

* Competitive salary of £25,760 – £27,476 (£13.17 per hour) with extra earning potential for unsocial hours
* Unsocial hours enhancements – an additional shift bonus for work between 8 pm and 6 am Monday – Friday, all‑day Saturday and Sundays & public holidays
* 35 days’ annual leave inclusive of Bank Holidays (pro‑rated)
* Flexible working hours on a rota pattern
* Free parking
* Blue Light discount card
* Generous NHS Pension Scheme
* Award‑winning Wellbeing hub
* Staff networks, training and development
* Salary Sacrifice schemes for cars or push bikes
* Access to occupational health
* Enhanced DBS check
* Bonus scheme
