Flood Defence Team Member, Environment Agency. Permanent, full-time role in Ealing. Salary starting at £25,308 with £2,186 London Weighting, rising to £27,293 for Team Member Level 2C after 2 years, subject to satisfactory performance. Grade: Team Member Level 2A.

You will work with government, local councils, businesses, civil society groups and communities to protect and improve the environment.

Responsibilities
* Operate, maintain and respond to flood and coastal risk management assets to safeguard communities.
* Tackle incidents and emergencies related to flooding and other environmental challenges as part of a 24/7 standby roster.
* Contribute to initiatives such as installing flood barriers, building sandbag walls, deploying high-volume pumps and assisting affected communities during flood situations.
* Utilise a wide range of tools and equipment (e.g., chainsaws, strimmers/brush cutters, heavy plant machinery, boats) to prevent and mitigate flood risks.
* Undertake tasks including structural maintenance, vegetation management, small construction projects, soft engineering, beach maintenance, and culvert/grille clearances.
* Operate, maintain and respond to assets from large flood relief channels and flood storage reservoirs to local flood defences in urban and rural environments.
* Work day-to-day across asset operation, asset maintenance (e.g., vegetation control, small construction tasks) and incident response.
* Use IT devices to track tasks and communicate with team members.
What you’ll need
* Ability to work in all weather conditions in a mix of urban and rural environments as part of a dedicated team.
* A valid UK manual driving licence and ability to travel to your base depot within 60 minutes to respond to incidents and meet urgent business needs.
* Passion for the outdoors and a genuine commitment to protecting the environment.
* Literacy and numeracy skills, willingness to learn in-house systems and use IT devices.
* Some understanding of site health and safety requirements; full training will be provided.
Where you will work
You will travel to your depot to check in daily and will be dispersed from there in smaller teams to carry out field work tasks within your geographical area.
Training and progression
New Flood Defence Team Member will be enrolled into the Water Environment Worker Apprenticeship. You will receive training in the use of tools, equipment, and health & safety protocols, and be mentored by experienced colleagues to ensure you have the necessary knowledge and skills.
