Department
The Department of Language and Linguistics (DLL) has 27 full-time academic members of staff and provides a broad spectrum of expertise in the study of language and in the practical teaching of modern foreign languages. Its core ambition is to offer students a transformative educational experience in these areas underpinned by high quality research. The majority of research conducted in the department is rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’, placing us 1st in the UK for research impact and 3rd in the UK for research quality overall (REF 2021).
Our linguistics expertise covers Theoretical and Descriptive linguistics, Applied linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, TEFL and Translation, Interpreting and Subtitling. We offer a wide range of languages including French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish that can be taken at degree level from beginners to advanced levels following the Common European Languages Framework.
The Department is now seeking to appoint a permanent, part-time (0.5FTE) Student Administrator.
Duties of the Role
As part of a strong professional services team, the post-holder will provide administrative support to all staff and students following undergraduate / postgraduate courses and modules.
You will be expected to take responsibility for specific initiatives or projects on behalf of the Deputy Department Manager, provide administration services in relation to courses, modules, assessment and student records, and support the work of the professional services team and academic staff as a whole.
You will work in accordance with the Department’s student services delivery model, and the Department’s principles, values and behaviours.
Qualifications and Skills required
We are looking for an individual with significant and recent administrative experience in a relevant environment; experience of working independently and within a team; skills in Microsoft packages in the workplace, in particular Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint; ability to work to demanding deadlines with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail; and the ability to identify and solve problems effectively and efficiently.
It is essential that the successful candidate has a minimum of five GCSEs at grades A-C (or equivalent) including English and Maths along with an administration qualification at NVQ 3 or equivalent, or substantial equivalent experience.
You will need to have excellent communication skills, considerable personal initiative, and strong interpersonal skills. With highly developed organisations skills, the successful candidate will have the ability to process information quickly in a changing environment whilst working accurately and managing multiple priorities. A key skill for this role will be to build excellent working relationships with a range of staff, often at different levels of seniority.
